Review Mitsubishi 3D Ready TV | DLP 1080p 120hz Full HD TV

By

I'm 3D Ready - Are You Ready for 3D HDTV?

With the so many 3D movies now available to enjoy in RealD, the world has been gripped in a 3D frenzy. As more and more 3D Ready products are released we know that there's no staving off the 3D entertainment revolution we are heading for, and in truth, who would want to?

If you're thinking about buying a 3D Ready TV or you've just bought one then welcome to the future. Here we're going to look at Mitsubishi's range of 3D Ready DLP HDTV's and what other equipment you'll need to go with it for a totally immersive 3D entertainment experience at home.

Mitsubishi have released their new wave of 3D Ready HDTV's at extremely affordable prices. At between $1,000 - $6,000 they cost no more than a good Full HD TV

Here, I'm focusing on the Mitsubishi 3D Ready DLP 1080p HDTV's and peripheral equipment that is 100% compatible with them, (such as 3D Stereoscopic glasses, 3D Blu Ray players, AV Receivers and Satellite Receivers), so there's no need to worry about buying equipment that doesn't work together.

Mitsubishi 3D Ready DLP HDTV's

The keys to top notch 3D rendering on TV, are PROCESSING SPEED, CLARITY and CRISPNESS, BLUR FREE MOTION and VIVID LIFE LIKE COLOR. Mitsubishi's 3D Ready HDTV's have all these qualities in buckets.

The main capabilities that these Mitsubishi 3D Ready TV's have over other Full HDTV's are DLP technology, mind blowingly fast screen refresh rates of 120hz or 240hz (which allows the TV to show two images at once) and plenty of HDMI connection ports to allow for a complete 3D multi media set up. At 1080p resolution, they are also Full HD rather than just HD Ready.

6 Color Processor For Stunning Image Quality

DLP which stands for Digital Light Processing uses a different system of image production to LCD or plasma TV's which allows DLP TV's to provide much better picture quality and to also show stereo images which produces the 3D effect. Amazingly, DLP HDTV's are usually cheaper than same size LCD or Plasma TV's!

These Mitsubishi 3D Ready DLP HDTV's also include their exclusive 6-Color Processor. Unlike many Full HD TV's which only work in 3 colors, Mitsubishi's 3D Ready TV's are capable of much more depth and clarity of color by using their 6-color technology. In conjunction with 1920 x 1080 resolution, Mitsubishi have given us a range of 3D Ready TV's that are mind blowingly technically advanced that are at extremely affordable prices.

"All 2010 Mitsubishi DLP HDTVs are 3D Ready. This new feature creates a high-def stereo 3D picture when connected to a compatible HDMI/DVI source.

This imaging technology is so fast, it can actually produce TWO images on the screen at the same time: One for the “left” eye and one for the “right” eye. Then 3D glasses combine the two images to create an amazing 3D effect."

Mitsubishi 3D Compatible Peripherals & Set Up

So you've chosen which Mitsubishi 3D TV you want now it's a case of choosing the kit to go with it. As I said earlier, it's not simply a case of buying a Mitsubishi 3D ready TV, plugging in and flying off into the 3rd dimension. While simple to set up, you're going to need a few other bits of kit to have a complete 3D TV, 3D Blu Ray and 3D satellite TV system which I'll explain in full below.

There are 5 main components that you'll need for a full Mitsubishi 3D home entertainment system, which are listed below. And if you want extra goodies they are also listed.

1. Mitsubishi 3D Ready HDTV

2. 3D Glasses and Emitter (Mitsubishi 3D Starter Kit)

3. 3D Blu Ray Player

4. HD Satellite Reciever

5. High Spec Cabling (HDMI 1.4)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Additionally, if you're looking for the whole 3D home theatre set up then it's worth considering getting an appropriate A/V receiver and surround sound system.

6. A/V Receiver

7. Surround Sound

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you're into gaming then the Playstation 3 is 3D capable when you download the 3D firmware update.

8. Playstation 3

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's take a quick look at this additonal equipment and which makes and models are recommended for the perfect 3D TV set up.

Mitsubishi DLP 3D TV with 3DC-1000 3D Starter Kit

If you've got (or want) a Mitsubishi 3D HDTV then you are going to want to invest in either the Mits 3D starter kit (3DC-1000) or lone 3D adpater (3-DA1). These items are a fairly recent development for Mitsubishi 3D HDTV's and are essential if you want to make the most of your Mitsubishi 3D TV.

The adapter allows you to watch 3D TV broadcasts and 3D Blu Ray movies by converting any 3D format (whether side by side, top bottom or frame sequential) into 3D that the Mits DLP TV can render. The starter kit includes the apapter, emitter and 2 x active shutter glasses and removes the need to connect your TV to your PC (as was previously the case). The Mitsubishi 3DC-1000 3D Starter Kit that is now available through amazon.com.

N.B. If you already have 3D DLP link glasses from Xpand then you will only need to buy the Mitsubishi 3-DA1 Adapter Pack.

3D Blu Ray DVD Players Compatible with Mitsubishi DLP 3D TV's

If you haven't already got one, then a 3D Blu Ray DVD player is an excellent addition to your 3D home media system. In conjunction with the rest of the peripherals explained above, you'll be able to watch the new 3D Blu Ray movies in super 3D. Fully 3D ready Blu Ray players have recently come onto the market from Samsung, Sony and Panasonic, but be aware that if you have a Mistubishi 3D Ready TV you'll need to buy one of the Sony or Panasonic 3D Blu Ray players, as the Samsung ones are incompatible with the Mits 3D DLP TV's.

If you don't have a 1080p A/V receiver and don't plan on buying one, then the best 3D Blu Ray player option is either the Panasonic DMT BDT100, BDT 300, BDT 350 or BDT 355. This is because they can all deliver a checkerboard 3D format and therefore can be plugged directly into your Mitsubishi 3D TV.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sony 3D Blu Ray Player

Sony BDP-S360 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player
Amazon Price: $150.00
List Price: $199.99

Sony's 3D Blu Ray players are also compatible with Mitsubishi 3D TV's but these cannot plug directly into the TV. They need to plug into the adpater or an A/V receiver which is connected to the adpater. (See set up chart above.)

It should be the same situation for any other 3D Blu Ray player that does not emit checkerboard format.

HD Satellite Receivers

If you want to get in on the 3D TV action from DIRECTV then you're going to need a DIRECTV HD or HD DVR satellite receiver, plus pay a montly subscription to their HD service ($10).

This will enable you to watch ESPN 3D, 3D Movies, n3D and if you have the DVR receiver DIRECTV on Demand.

HDMI 1.4 Cabling

Since good 3D rendering relies on speed, clarity and blur free motion, it's best to upgrade your standard HDMI cabling to faster and smoother transmission cabling to go with your 3D Ready TV and computer system. HDMI 1.4 is the 3D standard and it's worth replacing your existing HDMI's to these if you want to make the most of your 3D home theatre or TV set up.

Many of these specialist cables are selling at hugely inflated prices, but here you'll find the same quality at just a few bucks. Gold plate connexions provide the best quality information transfer between your interconnected systems for 1080p speed and the higest resolution possible.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some Nice Additions to Your 3D Home Theatre

The following products are not essential, but if you're feeling like you want to take the plunge into a total 3D experience at home, then it's well worth considering adding them to your 3D TV set up.

A/V Receiver and Surround Sound Speakers

If you're thinking about splashing out on a full 3D home theatre set up with a 7.1 surround sound speaker system, then you're going to need one of these A/V receivers with plenty of HDMI ports and a 1080p upscaling capability.

The Onkyo 7.2 AV receivers here, are capable of HDMI 1.4 - the required standard for 3D TV and upscale everything to 1080p. With 6 HDMI inputs and 1 output, there are plenty to connect up all of your home theatre system and you'll probably have a few to spare. Having an AV receiver basically saves the hassle of having to keep unplugging and swapping over equipment. (The Mitsubishi adapter only has one HDMI in.)

100% Compatibility Between Systems

I'll say it again, in case you missed it before - all of the products on this page are 100% compatible with each other. There is nothing worse than buying a product only to find that it doesn't work with your other hardware or software - I've done it before and I'm sure you have too. It's a complete pain in the butt! That's why I've carried out a great deal of research to ensure that all of the following 3D Ready systems are compatible and work perfectly with one another.

Susana S:

Thanx for the hub.Very informative, and so complete! I usually hate tech. stuff but I found this hub not comprehensive, but fun to read. Keep up the good work! :)

Susana S 2 years ago

Hey caretakeray - well that's a great compliment - thank you:)

ateenyi 2 years ago

Great Hub!!!!!!!

Excellent selection of the products culminated with superb description. The language used is very simple and easy to understand. The clarity and balance shine from this hub.

Susana S 2 years ago

Thanks ateenyi - that was my aim, to make 3D TV it as understandable as possible - so thanks for the validation :)

Red_Dragon 2 years ago

This 3D thing is gonna be big, but i dont know. Even as a gamer i dont think i am sold on the prospect yet. Nice hub though.

Susana S 2 years ago

Hi Red Dragon - Thanks :) I'm interested to know what makes you unsold on the prospect - is it cost that holds you back, waiting for a 3D standard to emerge or maybe waiting for a 3D set up to be less complex?

tomgiboney 2 years ago

It's possible that if you have an surround audio reciever that upscales the video, instead of just passes through the HDMI signal, that it could break the 3D sync. Just a heads up. I would make sure any surround reciever you buy doesn't upscale HDMI signals, most 3D capable HDTVs already do that anyway. Also, on Mitsubishi and Samsung DLP 3D ready HDTVs, make sure you plug your DVI->HDMI cable into the right HDMI port (should say DVI/HDMI).

Susana S 2 years ago

Hi Tom, thanks for that info. I'm sure it will be useful to others reading this page :)

Joseph R. Bova 2 years ago

First of all your column is extremely informative and helpful. To cut to the chase I need your simple straight forward answer. I just purchased a MITSUBISHI 65 INCH 3D READY TV. All I need is your input on what I EXACTLY need to make my TV a complete 3D TV. Believe me your column is one that everyone should read. The info you provided is quite a bit to digest for someone who is not a high tech person but I'm trying. Therefore, would you kindly provide the REQUIRED items I need to complete my 3D setup. After looking at the items you spoke about in your column I didn't know the exact configuration. Hence, the need for your expertise in the right 3D setup. Thank you for your help. It is greatly appreciated. Hope to hear from you soon.

Susana S 2 years ago

Hi Joseph - it is rather complicated. To complete your 3D set up you will need:

nVidia GeForce Vision Kit

Plus your PC must have the following minimum requirements:

GPU/Video Card - nVidia GeForce 8 series, GeForce 9 series, or GeForce GTX 200 series

Intel or AMD Dual-core CPU

1GB or higher of system memory (2GB is better)

100 MB free disk space

Microsoft Windows Vista 32/64-bit or Windows 7 32/64-bit

Please let me know if I can help further.

3D TV is surely unique and more enjoyable experience of watching TV. Though its installation is quite complicated but tech people definably love it. Now without the 3D glasses you can enjoy your most favorite 3D movie at home too.Mitusbishi already enter in the 3D TV market and they really performing very well job. Nice hub and very simple but informative article.

new XpanD X102 glasses emitter free only for DLP 3d tv...DLP-Link....hell yeah PS3 firmware update that will let you play and watch in 3D.what else can i say.im going out this weekend to buy the 65C9 mitsubishi TV.

RonnieH 2 years ago

Your 3D primer for 3D Ready TV is excellent - to the point and easily understandable. However, one more question. When DIRECTV begins their ESPN 3D broadcasts in June, will I still need the PC and necessary software to receive their broadcasts or will I simply need the 3D glasses and transmitter (I have Mitsubishe DLP)? Thanks again for your great article.

Susana S 2 years ago

Hi Ronnie, sorry for the late reply. My understanding is that you will just need the emitter and active shutter glasses to watch 3D TV broadcasts on your 3D ready TV. The cheapest system at the moment is definitely the nVidia 3D vision Kit and because it has been designed to work with Misubishi 3D Ready TV's (and vice versa) it's the best product to go for to use with your Mitsubishi DLP.

N.B.** Not all Mitsubishi DLP TV's are 3D ready, so double check that you have a 3D socket on the back of your set.

Ms Chievous 2 years ago

Alright.. So I can purchase a 3 D ready TV. Are they considered LED or LCD?

Susana S 2 years ago

These particular 3D Ready TV's from Mitsubishi aren't LED or LCD, they are DLP (Digital Light Processing).

DLP is a different image display system that produces an extremely crisp, clear and life-like image, in part because these DLP HDTV's use a 6 color processor rather than only 3 colors (as most modern TV's do.) Everyone that has a DLP TV loves them!

Giuseppe 2 years ago

First of all, thanks for the great explanation very well-done! Can I translate it in italian?

Can you add somethig about XpanD X102 DLP link glasses that work without IR? and directly with 3D Ready DLP projectors?

Susana S 2 years ago

Hi Guiseppe - You want to copy my work? LOL! Yes, ok, as long as it is in Italian and you add a DoFollow link to my original page.

Yes, I will add in about the new XpanD active shutter glasses. They're a perfect solution for those with Mitsubishi 3D Ready DLP TV and/or 3D DLP Projectors who only want to watch 3D movies and 3D TV (rather than gaming). They save a lot of messing about with connecting up everything through the PC, but gamers will still need nVidia's 3D vision kit, rather than these XpanD glasses.

Pat 2 years ago

Hi Susana. Great info! Can you explain more about how to use the xcm box to play console games with your 3D setup?

Thanks

Susana S 2 years ago

Hi Pat - I'm actually going to take the XCM box info off this article because it's so complicated to set up and it's practically obsolete now anyway. In a few months Sony will be releasing the PS3 3D firmware update for gaming in 3D and a little while after that, the firmware update for playing 3D Blu Ray movies. I'm sure the other console manufacturers will follow suit, so it's really not worth buying the extra equipment.

Travis 2 years ago

If i have an xbox 360 which connects with hdmi to tv. Would i still need the nvida glasses kit, or could i stay with the x102 no emitters.

Also, is there any setup for the x102 to link or sync to the tv.

Also (Sorry) I bought my DLP 3d ready Mitsubishi in december 2009, and i am sure it is just HDMI 1.3, Would i need to buy the adabpter that is comming out this spring by Mitsubshi to convert it, our will they provide a firmware update for TV.

THanks for your acticle, it is the best one on the web that i can find!!!!

Very Nice

Travis 2 years ago

I guess im thinking in terms of I am not going to use a PC to get 3d, i am going to wait for the 3d blu ray, and 3d xbox 360 and 3d from Dish Network (Someday i hope).

Travis 2 years ago

Sick of me yet!

Lets say i have the 3d blu ray player with the adapter for my tv, and i want to go buy a 3d blu ray movie.

How would i know that a 3d blu ray is "DLP" compatible, with the shutter.

Some 3d blu ray movies come with their own glasses, would they work with DLP.

I dont know if i am asking the question using the right words?

i think i want to say is, is there going to be different formats of 3d blu ray movies?

thanks

Susana S 2 years ago

Hi Travis - No I'm not sick of you, lol. It's great that you have so many questions! Some of your questions I can answer now, some I'll have to do a bit of research for.

3D Blu Ray - The new 3D movies such as the ones coming out this year e.g. "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" are all compatible with the new 3D Blu Ray players. This is really the only area within 3D technology where the is a 3D standard. The 3D movies that come with glasses (e.g. Coraline) AREN'T the same format - you don't need a 3D Blu Ray player or 3D TV to watch them.

It's the new format (stereoscopic) 3D movies that do need a 3D TV, 3D Blu Ray player and active shutter glasses (these type will NOT come with 3D glasses and there are very few of these movies out yet). For more on this area read: http://hubpages.com/hub/3d-blu-ray-player

It details which 3D Blu Ray movies are for the new 3D blu ray players.

Susana S 2 years ago

Now Mitsubishi have made an error of judgement really in their development of 3D TV. Their 3D DLP TV's use a checkerboard format and the new 3D blu ray movies and 3D TV broadcasts aren't going to be in checkerboard, they are going to be alternate frame sequencing. This is why Mitsubishi have developed the 3DC-1000 3D adapter. So to enjoy both of these (3d Tv broadcasts and 3d blu ray movies) you will need to buy the adapter as well as a 3D blu ray player. Be careful which 3d blu ray player you buy though, because they are not all compatible with 3D DLP TV's - Sony's players are; Samsung's aren't.

What I need to go and find out is if you'll still need to run your mitsubishi 3d TV through nVidia 3D vision on your PC to get the 3D output. My first inclination is that you will, but I'll check this out to find out for sure.

Susana S 2 years ago

To move onto your XpanD x102 glasses questions. As you know the Mitsubishi 3D TV's do not have an inbuilt emitter and the x102 glasses do not come with one. It says the x102 work via DLP Link technology and that no emitter is necessary, but I still beleve that the Mitsubishi 3D TV's need a 3D source device to show 3D content ie: nVidia 3D Vision. I found this:

"Mitsubishi 3DTVs will require the use of a 3D source device that outputs the 3D checkerboard format, a 3D source device coupled with the Mitsubishi 3D adapter, or other source devices that support checkerboard display formats for display of 3D games, 3D broadcasts from terrestrial/cable/satellite and 3D Blu-ray disc content."

Travis 2 years ago

Thanks Susana, I would hope that i all i would need to do is hook a 3d blu ray to the 3dc-1000 and hook the 3dc-1000 to the tv, and use the shutter glasses.

If that is not the case, then i might want to think about selling my beautiful tv to get a new one with the new format

Travis 2 years ago

Great article you found there. Sounds like the newer tvs still use the older format and still need the converter? Except that they will be DLP Link friendly.

I will probably have to use the nvidia Glasses and emitter. But i hope i wouldnt have to use the PC. Sounds like the PC is the only "Current" device that can properly output the correct format.

Im assuming and i could be wrong, that the 3dc-1000 is going to have a few HDMI 1.4 "in" and 1 hdmi 1.3a out to tv?

And that would just work with the new standard?

So then i would need a few HDMI 1.4 cables also when i buy the 3d blu ray and xbox or satelite when available? Confusing!

I hope i am understanding it. I wish Mitsubishi would have a write up how their TV's work with 3d. I guess they were a little ahead of the industry.

radio7 2 years ago

Nice article! I was very close to getting a Mitsubishi, but will probably get an LCD The reason is I've heard that the Mits will not display full 3D HD, but rather in checkerboard it will only do 1/2 resolution. Even with their new converter this is true. I figure it probably still looks great. And for those with a Mits set they must be VERY happy. However, I have a 10 year old, dying 65 inch CRT projection. So I have to start all over.

That said, I was close to getting the Mits. Especially since I couldn't find a big LCD. Then I read Vizio will have a 72 inch LCD around August. After reading up on it, I found out it does FULL 3D HD, and has 480Hz, so 240 per eye. I know that's maybe a little more than is needed, but over all it sounds like something that will provide a better picture. And it's fairly cheap for an LCD at $3500. But still way more than the DLP. Various things, including technology enhancements, wireless HDMI, internet functions made it really seem worth it.

Then I read about the problems many DLP's have where they break often. Like breaking (or squeaking) color wheels etc. Don't get me wrong. I saw the mits and think it's great! But I still think the other will look even sharper. Finally I released that the set will need bulbs every year or so. That would be about a $1000+ expense in 10 years. So that makes an $1800 Mits, $2800. That said, the other one doesn't seem that far off.

My big delima is however the glasses. They are so expensive. I'd need 4 pairs. And from what I understand that's a minimum of $600 ($150 each), assuming the TV maker will include the emitter. But I also want to hook up my PC to the big TV. I have the latest PC with Nvidia GTX 470 so I'm ready. However, I'm not sure what will or won't work.

I'm guessing I can hook the TV to the screen. But what if I want to have 3d games on my own computer in a separate room on a separate monitor? can I take the Xpand glasses I'll get and use them on the computer's monitor? Probably not. In that case I'll need an additional $200 for Nvidia's glasses as well. That REALLY bugs me to think of that. And I probably can't afford all of it as it is.

So I'm trying to figure out a way to make sure the glasses can be used on the TV and the computer to play games. and I hope I can hook the computer to the TV, but think I can. It's a mess, lol. Unless I can use the nvidia with the vizio? But it uses bluetooth. Maybe there is alternate input for this? Hmmm..

radio7 2 years ago

To clarify something, my reason for thinking it will look better isn't based on refresh, but rather other details I read about it. Also noticing how much they put into this new set. It sounds like the electronics are ready to take on basically anything, including full hd 3d. But even with all of that, I still come back to read up on everything I can since I want to be sure on things. Plus I have a wait before the other set comes out anyway. That said, I can watch fuzzy people with blue or red hair for a little while longer, lol.

Susana S 2 years ago

Hi Travis - Yep there certainly is a great deal of confusion regarding 3D - what you need, what you don't need, what does what and what is compatible with each manufacturer. I need to find out more about the converter box and exactly what it does - you'd think Mitsubishi would have some info available, but I'm going to have to contact them directly. Sorry I can't give you more info right now, but I will do my best to find out.

Susana S 2 years ago

Hi Radio - Thanks for the info RE: Vizio, I wasn't aware of that. You have a lot of very important questions and I think it will be best if I write everything out in a new article, otherwise this very long Mits article here will be another 1000 words, lol!

nVidia recommend using 3D vision with Mitsubishi DLP or one of the new 3D capable monitors such as ViewSonic's, so will probably not be compatible with Vizio's XVT. I'll give some thought to the set up you're after and work out what's compatible as well as what will be the cheapest so check back now and again for updates :)

Diana 2 years ago

Hi! I have been searching all over the internet for information on these 3D shutter glasses compatability, etc. Loved your column, it did help alot, however I still have a question or two...

One, when I purchased my first Mitsubishi 73" DLP 3D ready I was told it was READY. I thought GREAT as soon as the tech is available I'm ahead of the curve and I'm ready. (which equated to me I would NOT HAVE TO BUY ANYTHING FURTHER! It was READY!) So, just 3 months ago I bought another 73" Same TV (this one goes in the bedroom)because it TOO was READY! After reading your column, LOOK at all the stuff I STILL need. HOW is that READY????????? I figured a 3D Blu Ray player was all I needed when the time came. Then I found out I'd need 3D glasses...well OK, that makes sense...the BEST experience (and only since you need the darn things $$$). NOW a computer, software, blah blah blah $$$ cha-ching. Why can't this TV work with a 3D blu ray player (Sony is OK, I have 2 of those that are not 3D ready but one was supposed to be "upgradeable to it") and 3D glasses. Why the computer and all this software?

It's really frustrating and the 3D READY was SOOOOOOOO misleading!!!! Would not have bought 2 of these huge TV's had I known otherwise. I recently (last week) went to Sears and experienced the Samsung 3D setup (they didn't NEED a computer, just the 3D TV, blu ray 3D player, 3D movie, and the shutter glasses)and it was awesome! They had a deal you get 2 pair shutter glasses and the 3D movie Aliens & monsters I think, if you purchased the Blu Ray player. I said heck yeah I'll buy the 3D blu ray player (getting the goodies for free)ONLY TO FIND OUT they won't work with my Mitsubishi 3D "READY" TV. How READY is my darn TV then???????? Ugggghhhh so frustrating!!!!!!! Would have NEVER bpought two 73" Mitsubishi's! False advertising!!!!!!!!!

Diana 2 years ago

To add to my previous comments....I also want surround sound...I already have a sony surround system hooked up to the Mits (my 73" DLP)I understand you need 1.4 HDMI cable too...my TV is 1.3a...what the heck? MORE $$$$ to shell out? Is the 1.4 cable required for the audio only portion???? (AV receivers?)If they have a splitter that takes the 1.4 to 1.3 isn't that downgrading it and you won't get full 3D HD?????? All this is so confusing. I read, I feel I understand, then bam something else is a problem for my Mitsubishi's and more & more $$$$$$$$$. Mitsubishi should GIVE the converters to those who purchased their darn "3D READY" Tv's when they are NOT THE STANDARD FORMAT!!!!!!!! Are we going to have the BEST quality pic and 3D experience with all these converters and splitters, and whatever else in the next 10 minutes I find I'll need???? Can I sue Mitsubishi for false advertising??????

Susana S 2 years ago

Hi Diana - I understand your frustration. There are many in your position which is why I wrote this article. There is no 3D standard across the board which certainly makes life difficult for us comsumers. When you read Mitsubishi's small print it says 3D source device required and this is the PC with nVidia 3D vision loaded onto it.

I'm hoping that the new adapter will remove the need to hook the TV up to the PC and that it will simply be a case of plugging in a 3D Blu Ray player and 3D glasses with emitter, but I can't find much info on it at the moment. I'll do more searching and get back to you.

Robb O 23 months ago

Why do I need a computer system with my new 73" DLP Mitsubishis 838 model? I was told I only need - well, essentially the nVidia Vision kit (ir emitter, shutter glasses)?

Susana S 23 months ago

If you look at the nVidia 3D Vision kit you'll see that as well as ir emitter and shutter glasses it also has 3D rendering software to convert side by side 3D to 3D checkerboard format which needs loading on a suitable PC and then connecting to the TV.

"One word of warning though. Mitsubishi’s 738 and 838 series currently support the side-by-side 3D signal format. For support of other 3D formats, such as 3D Blu-ray standard top-bottom and frame packing, Mitsubishi 3DTVs will require the use of a 3D source device that outputs the 3D checkerboard format, a 3D source device coupled with the Mitsubishi 3D adapter, or other source devices that support checkerboard display formats for display of 3D games, 3D broadcasts from terrestrial/cable/satellite and 3D Blu-ray disc content."

To overcome these issues Mitsubishi have developed a new 3D starter Kit (3DC-1000 3D HDTV Starter Pack) that includes 2 x 3D glasses, ir emitterand 3D adpater. The adpater basically replaces the need for nVidia software and converts any 3D format, so that it can watched in 3D on the Mits DLP TV's. This starter kit is available for pre order at amazon.com at $399. This is probably your best option if you want to be able to enjoy all kinds of 3D media such as 3D Blu Ray through a 3D Blu Ray Player, 3D television broadcasts and 3D gaming on a PS3.

The other option are XpanD's x102 DLP link active shutter glasses. These don't need an emitter, but I'm not sure which 3D formats they support.

Earl 23 months ago

Very informative. I'm wondering if there are any major differences between getting a 3D Ready Mitsubishi with the adapter vs getting a Full 3D TV. Would the picture quality suffer by using the adapter? I am planning on making a purchase withing the next month, for use with gaming and blu-rays on the PS3. I want the best deal, and Mitsubishi seems to have it. But I am also concerned about quality, and it seems that Full 3D TVs with HDMI 1.4 would have an advantage over 1.3 3D via the adapter. Are my concerns warranted, or are the difference so minimal that I wouldn't tell the difference?

Susana S 23 months ago

HI Earl, it's hard to say as the adpater has not been released yet and I don't know anyone that has had the opportunity to try it out. Though I doubt there would be any noticable degredation because the adpater has been designed to accept HDMI 1.4a. http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com/3D.html

The image quality of the Mits DLP 3D TV's is superior in my opinion to the plasma and LED 3D TV's I've seen, so I don't really think there would be any issue.

I don't know about the new 3d hype yet. The videogame conventions are full of new games that will use new 3d technology but I'm not completely convinced yet. Well we have to wait and see how it all works out :)

Thanks for sharing, Susana S!

Ralph 22 months ago

I bought the 67in led dlp tv and the 60737 mitsubishi tv and was told all I needed was this adapter. Now come to find out mitsu isn't letting it work with the samsung. Does this mean the only way I can use both tvs is the computor way and will it be ok with direct tv and 3d bluyray. I did ask tech support about the 3d dlp link x102 glasses and they told me all I need is the glasses and it would automaticly senk up with the tv. No need for adapters or computor. Is this true do you think. The glasses are about 124.00 a pare

Susana S 22 months ago

Hi Ralph, Can you clarify your question a bit as I'm struggling to work out what you want to know? You have 2 3d ready TV's? What part of your set up is Samsung?

The 3D DLP link glasses from XpanD are compatible with the checkerboard 3D format only which is what the mits 3D TV's use. Unfortunately not all 3D media or other 3D devices (such as 3D blu ray players) are in the checkerboard format - that's why you'll probably need to buy the mitsubishi adpater (which converts any 3D signal into checkerboard).

Having just done a bit of digging around there is a 3D blu ray player that supports the checkerboard format. It's the Panasonic BDT300 and BDT350, so this would seem to be the best option for you to use with your Mits DLP 3D TV and the XpanD x102 3 glasses. http://www.electronichouse.com/article/panasonic_3

DirectTV is saying that your mitsubishi 60737 IS compatible with their 3D TV broadcasts: http://support.directv.com/app/answers/detail/a_id

So you will be able to watch their 3D programs with the XpanD DLP link glasses, just by plugging them into your TV (no need for a PC or adapter)

Hope that helps :)

Matt 22 months ago

Great dialogue! I have enjoyed reading. Just to elaborate and hopefully help. . .

If you own a Mits 3D Ready TV:

You can watch 3D almost immediately by hooking up the Panasonic Blu-Ray BDT300 or BDT350 directly to the tv. It does indeed support checkerboard format which is used by the tv. Buy Xpand X102's and you are ready to watch 3D movies. They work off of the light within the tv and don't need an emitter. With a surround sound system, I recommend using the optical output on the Blu-Ray player and running it into the optical input on your amp. This way you are using one cable for sound and one for picture and guarantee the strongest signal.

Now, to hook up your 3D programming from DirecTV or Dish (hopefully soon), you will need to buy the Mits Adapter 3DC-1000 to convert the signal to checkerboard so the tv can display 3D. It is only $99 by itself. The adapter only has one input, which is why it is important to use the Panasonic Blu-Ray player, which you have feeding directly into the tv itself. Just to clarify, if you had another 3D Blu-Ray player, you would have to run that through the adapter, which only has one input. You need that one input for your satellite feed.

Once you feed the satellite HDMI cable into the adapter, you will use the HDMI output on the adapter to feed into the tv. Once again, for surround sound, you should have the option to run optical out of the sat receiver into your amp (hopefully you have two optical inputs). Now you have 3D Blu-Ray and 3D programming running into your tv. All you have to do is switch between inputs on your tv. And up to this point, you still have no need for the emitter because the Xpand X102's sync with the light inside your DLP tv.

One note if optical cables will not work for you and you still want surround sound on both your Blu-Ray and your programming. You can use your amp like a switch box and run all of your HDMI cables into your amp. Then run the HDMI out of your amp and into the adapter. One more HDMI cable will run out of your adapter and into your tv. I have heard this works, but you are now using three HDMI cables to carry the signal. Not sure how much that weakens it.

Hopefully this helps.

Ray 21 months ago

How do you setup the Mitsubishi 3DC-1000 adapter to your 3d Bluray player through HDMI if you already have the player hooked up through HDMI on the TV?

Susana S 21 months ago

Hi Ray, the mitsubishi adapater has two HDMI ports, one says HDMI out (this is the one you use to connect to your TV) and the second says HDMI in (use this one for your 3d blu ray player). If you have more than one piece of equipment you want to run through the adpater you'll need an AV receiver. Hope that helps and thanks for stopping by.

Rudis 21 months ago

Hi, I have similar question as Diana, I would like to use Mits. DLP TV with PC, so I have no problem with compatibility, but as Diana told, it have only hdmi 1.3, but not hdmi 1.4. I'm not sure with that, but I also think it's right. And hdmi 1.3 can't transfer 1080p in 3D, I heard that only 1080i or 720p in 3d or 1080p in 2d. So this TV really downgrade full HD 3d picture to little lower resolution or it have some solution? And will it help me if I don't need to tranfer audio through hdmi and transfer only video?

Susana S 21 months ago

Here's what Mitsubishi says:

"Our testing has shown that HDMI Category 2 High Speed type cables, which have been available for several years, are suitable for the 3D signals outlined in the HDMI 1.4a standards."

Category 2 includes 1.3, 1.3a and 1.3b - they are fine for your Mits/PC set up.

Rudis 21 months ago

Will this Tv work with DLP link glasses also for gaming on PC with 3d vision drivers? Or I must have 3d vision kit for gaming? And will it work with other types of DLP link glasses? Not only with one from Xpan? I think it should. Benq have also DLP link glasses, they are cheaper than 3d vision kit because they don´t have emitter, and if it could work, it will be best deal for me, because Benq glasses are easier available in my country than Xpan.

Susana S 20 months ago

The mitsubishi 3D tv will work with other dlp link glasses, but I'm not sure that nVidia's 3D vision software will, so you'll have to contact nvidia directly about that. If you get the 3D vision kit you can use the glasses that come with that instead of buying extra DLP link glasses.

Kelly 19 months ago

I am sorry ...I am so not a techie. I have been considering purchasing Mit. WD-65838 and was told I just need the kit ($399) to view 3D channels/play games and watch 3D movies (my son has a PS3 that is supposed to be able to play 3D now). Is this correct or would I still need a 3D computer? Thanks!

Susana S 19 months ago

Hi Kelly, I'm in the middle of updating this article as it has become a little out of date. But as it's taking longer than I thought, I'll give you the info first to save you waiting!

You're right, a computer is not necessary anymore. Just get yourself the Mitsubishi 3D starter kit alongside the WD 65838. To watch 3D TV channels such as ESPN, n3D and 3D movies from DIRECTV you'll also need the DIRECTV HD satelittle receiver and a subscription to DIRECTV's HD service if you don't have it already.

Enjoy!

Mason F 19 months ago

Hi, i was just wondering if u NEED a 240hz television to diplay 3d. cause we recently bought a SHARP LED-LCD 60" tv that is 120hz that doesn't say anything about 3D capability. but just want to know if we can buy an attachment of some sort to make it 3D capable, thx.

Susana S 19 months ago

Hi Mason - 240hz is not an essential for a 3D TV (many are 120hz) but the TV does have to be specifically 3D. I didn't realise that Sharp had some 3D TV's on the market, but they have 2: Aquos LC-60LE925UN and Aquos LC-52LE925UN

If you bought one of these televisions you're in luck. If not, then unfortunately there is nothing you can do to make your TV 3D capable.

Mason F 19 months ago

Ty for the reply. unfortunately my T.V. isn't one of those models. However i really do want some way to view 3d movies and games in my household, so i went online and saw that they have 3D capable computer monitors available for roughly around $400. I was just wondering if you know if i could hook up my Ps3 to the monitor to watch blu ray movies and play Ps3 games like i could to a 3D television, or are 3D monitors and 3D televisons completely different in what capabilities they have.

Susana S 19 months ago

You're welcome. Unfortunately it's not that simple (if only.....) The monitors are different to 3D TV's in that they have the speed required to display 3D but the actual 3D component comes from the PC GPU, software and sync unit they are hooked up to e.g. nVidia 3D Vision Kit.

So nope your PS3 will not be able to do 3D when plugged into a 3D monitor - it has to be a 3D TV.

The cheapest 3D TV available is the Mitsubishi WD-60638 at just under $1000 but you'll also need the mits 3DC-1000 starter pack which comes with 3D glasses and an adpater. That's about the cheapest you are going to be able to do it unless you get a second hand mits 3D TV.

From Carnells

Great article, Susana!! Very informative. I have a Mitsu 60"(WD-60737) DLP and would love to view in 3D, but find myself confused by the compatibility issues. Is it true that Samsung's 3D Blu Ray players wouldn't work on my Mitsu DLP? I already saw what u said about Sony's 3D Blu Ray players not working on Mitsu DLPs, and it's a good thing because I was close to purchasing one!

Here's my plan, please tell me if it will work: I went to Ultimate 3D Heaven and found the Mitsu 3D adapter, 6 pairs of X-Force 3D glasses (with emitter), and 2 3D Blu Ray discs for $350+ tax.

I was planning on buying that deal from Ultimate 3D Heaven, then combining it with a Samsung 3D Blu Ray player (if they work toegether?) or with Panasonic's DMP-BDT350 3D Blue Ray player, because I read somewhere that Panas do work well, with Mitsubishi TVs In addition to 3D playback, I'm really trying to find a blu ray player with DLNA tech (which Samsung has with Allshare, and the Panasonic bd player already has) so that I can stream media from my Samsung Epic 4G phone as well via blu ray DLNA, since Mitsu DLPs aren't DLNA certified. I found a perfect Sony 3D blu ray player that has everything I'm looking for, but after reading your comment about it not being compatible, I discarded that product and idea. ANY COMMENTS OR SUGGESTIONS ON HOW MY 60" MITSU DLP WOULD WORK WITH THE MITSU 3D ADAPTER, X-FORCE 3D GLASSES, AND THE PANASONIC DMP-BDT350 3D HD BLU RAY PLAYER (WHICH ALREADY HAS BUILT IN WI-FI AND DLNA)? Thanks again for your informative comparison and any advice u can give.

**UPDATE, (10 hrs after reading your article on Samsung vs Mitsu 3D TVs) After reading THIS article, I NOW KNOW that Sony 3D Blu Ray players do infact work on Mitsu DLPs as long as u have the Mitsu converter! Thanks again, Susana! Please checkout the link I provided for the bundle from Ultimate3DHeaven.com and let me know if the X-Force 3D Glasses are compatible and ok? (They HAVE to be or they wouldn't sell them in the bundle, right?) **

Susana S 19 months ago

Hi Carnells, thanks :) I think you misread the article! I said right there that Sony's 3D Blu Ray players are compatible with Mitsubishi 3D TV's if they are plugged into the Mitsubishi adpater.

Depending on the set up you want, the Panasonic 3D Blu Ray players are handy because they can plug directly into the TV, freeing up the one HDMI in on the 3-DA 1 adpater for your satellite box or playstation 3.

I went over to check out the X-Force 3D glasses at their website and they seem to require software that you load onto your PC making for quite a complex set up. But if the X-Force glasses are DLP link glasses then they should work by just plugging in the emitter to the TV, though I can't see any info on that.

I would double check with the website that the 3D glasses are DLP link and if they are then you are ready to go. Then it's just a case of choosing which 3D Blu Ray player you want and whether you want to keep the HDMI in port free for another peripheral. Cheers!

carnells 19 months ago

Thank you very much for your quick and informative response!

One last question about Mitsu 3D DLPs: Since these TVs don't have DLNA technology, but both the Panasonic BDT350 3D bd player and all of the Sony 3D blu ray players I saw also have DLNA, shouldn't I be able to stream media from my DLNA certified Samsung Epic 4G phone to the Mitsu 3D DLP via one of the 3D blue ray players? I tried checking this out on dlna.org, but got a little confused. Do u know if this would work?

Susana S 19 months ago

Hi Carnells - sorry I can't help you on that one.

zaners 19 months ago

This is great! This is the most helpful post I have been able to find.. Mitsu should be paying you!! I do have a Q and im looking for an A, hoping you can help me. I have a PS3 and want to watch blu-ray movies in 3d on my mitsu tv but you suggest a seperate 3d bluray player for 3d movies and the ps3 for games. Is the ps3 fine for 3d movies? If so, will there be a difference in quality between the ps3 and, for instance, the panisonic 3d bluray player when watching 3d bluray movies? Thank you for your time! -Zane

Susana S 19 months ago

Hi zaners - I wish Mitsubishi would pay me, lol! You should be fine watching 3d blu ray movies on your 3D mits with your PS3 that has the firmware update 3.50 *if* you have the mitsubishi adapter and HDMI 1.4 cables.

The only reason I recommend the panasonic 3d blu ray player is that it outputs checkerboard format which is the native format for mitsubishi 3d TV's and will plug directly into the TV, freeing up the one and only socket in the adpater for another peripheral. Also with less connections required the image should be slightly better.

My advice is if you already have a PS3, then try it out and see what the 3D blu ray quality is like. If it's not as good as you expected then think about getting the panasonic. Cheers!

Jason 19 months ago

Hi, I've been shopping for a new laptop and would be extremely happy if I could get my 3d vision kit to work along with it and my WD-60735. I've been doing a little research and I know that there are a few 3d laptops out there that come with 3d vision. 3d on my laptop would be nice, but I don't know if viewing games and movies in 3d on a 15 inch screen would be very impressive. Do you know if I might be able to use a high end laptop w/hdmi out and powerful nvidia graphics processor to achieve what I'm looking for?

Also, I recently read that NVIDIA is releasing 3dtv play for laptops to connect to 3d televisions. NVIDIA's site says that this software doesn't work with 3d vision glasses and Mitsubishi dlp tv's are not listed in their compatibility list. I hope that isn't the answer to my question.

Susana S 18 months ago

Hi Jason, that's incredible that nVidia's 3DTV play doesn't work with 3D DLP TV's! I checked it out and their website is clear about that.

Still, you can get a laptop that will do what you want it to ie: work with 3D vision for 3d gaming and 3d blu ray alongside your mitsubishi 3d tv.

I recommend this laptop: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0041RRS0I?ie=UTF

Unless the laptop you choose is pre-installed with a 3D blu ray drivers/software you'll need cyberlink PowerDVD 10 which is $80 at the moment - usually $100.

Jason 18 months ago

Thank you so much Susana!

jesse 18 months ago

a bit confused. sorry. The ps3 with the 3d download, do you need the adaptor still? Someone asked me if i could use the 3d glasses from a dlp theatre? Can i?

Susana S 18 months ago

If you have a mitsubishi 3D TV, you'll need to adapter to get the most out of it because it converts any 3D format into checkerboard. There may be some PS3 games in checkerboard format, but I'm not aware of any, so yes you will need the adapter if you want to play all 3D games in 3D.

Not sure what you mean about 3D glasses from a DLP theatre? If you mean a home theatre with a HD DLP projector that uses DLP link 3D glasses such as XpanD X102, then yes you can use them with a 3D Mitsubishi DLP TV.

Hi just wondering about picture quality on wd 82738 for 2d and 3d versus say one of the 3-d panasonics... Thanks for your time

Susana S 18 months ago

Hi Tom - it's a very close call as both have amazing picture quality. I would say the panasonics have blacks that are a touch deeper.

John Grindstaff 18 months ago

How does the new Mitsu. Firmware upgrade effect all this now ? I own the WD-73833 I have been researching and finding that the adapter will no longer be required. also do all the Mitsu. 3D tv's require an emitter as it is not built into the TV ? will all the new 3D players now be compatiable with Mitsu 3D tv's ? lots of confusion and frustration out there for us Mitsu.3D owners your info has been awesome and detailed. also is HDMI 1.4a really required or can I do HDMI pass through with my current Yamaha RX-V665 HDMI 1.3 reciever ? current cofiguration Directv HR20DVR,XBOX 360,no 3D Blu-Ray player yet. any info would be awesome.Thank you

Susana S 18 months ago

Hi John, I know, it can be totally confusing, especially as things are changing continuously! According to the Mitsubishi website the upgrade is not available for your model. http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com/3Dupgrade.html

This means that you will need to buy the 3DA-1 adapter. If you don't have 3D DLP link glasses then I would suggest you buy the mitsubishi starter kit which includes the adapter and two pairs of 3d glasses.

All 3D ready mitsubishi's have an inbuilt DLP link emitter, which send the 3D image to the 3D DLP link glasses.

As your TV model is HDMI 1.3 and so is your yamaha AV receiver it may work for 3D pass through, but I can't find a definite answer on that one.

My suggestion would be to get the adapter or starter kit and a panasonic 3d blu ray player and you'll be set to go. The advantage of the panasonic 3D blu ray players is that they can plug directly into your TV because they can output checkerboard format which is the native format of the Mits 3D TV's (they are also blindingly good so it's not a compromise in any way).

If you find that your yamaha can't manage 3D pass through, then your set up will be DirecTV DVR >> 3DA-1 adapter >> TV

Hope that helps!

John G 18 months ago

Thanks for the rapid response, Im actually getting a Firmware upgrade tomorow now if it's the 012.06 3D software upgrade that remains to be seen, they told me it is but we all know how that goes. I guess Mitsu. thinks us owners of 60/65/738 and 60/65/737 series 3D ready TV's pre 2010 must of scrapped our TV's already lol. I will post back what firmware upgrade they sent me. One thing that I feel may help people to is that if you want to maintain the DTS HD and Dolby Digital HD decoders of newer recievers you have to maintain the HDMI connection through a reciever. I did notice that the new Panasonic 3D player had two HDMI outs that's awesome for us Mitsu owners in that we can directly feed one straight to the TV and one straight to the Reciever(for the decoders) thus like you said freeing up the Mitsu. adapter(if needed) for something else.so much info and questions sorry. also will the emitter work with any of the active shutter glasses currently out ? are the Mitsu glasses just as good as the Samsung, panasonic, sony glasses?

eric s 18 months ago

Considering that these 3D TV's are less expensive than similarly sized LCD's or plasmas, can you simply use it as a 1080p 2D TV and ignore the 3d part? any downside to this? thanks

Susana S 18 months ago

Hi eric - No downsides at all. They're fabulous in 2D as well. The 3D part is just a bonus if it's something you're interested in - if not just enjoy the Mits as a regular (but stunning) HD TV.

Susana S 18 months ago

John - Well I'll certainly be interested to find what upgrade you get! Do let me know. If it saves you having to buy an adapter that will be a real result.

The Mitsubishi website is so crap it's unbelievable, so I wouldn't be surprised to find out from you that the info on there is wrong! But at least they trying to make sure those customers with older 3D Mitsu's can use them for what they were intended for. Samsung have just not bothered and there are many of their older 3D TV owners who are mightily pissed. Anyway back to your questions....

Because there are so many issues with compatibility between manufacturers and the 3D formats they have chosen to use (side by side, frame sequential, top/bottom, checkerboard) I would recommend going for the TV makers own 3D glasses/emitter in most cases, but as well as Mitsubishi's 3D glasses you also have the option of XpanD's X102 or X103 DLP link glasses. Some people prefer these as they are lighter to wear, but there is no difference in image quality. It's just a comfort thing.

I'll look forward to hearing from you!

rxa777 18 months ago

concerning the 3d upgrade on Mitsubishi 738 / 838 series models, I did some additional reading and in the instructions sheet, upon clicking a pdf link, I was able to read that after the firmware upgrade, the adapter will no longer be required. If I read this right, several 3d blu ray player brands may now be compatible for direct connection to a hdmi port on these Mitsubishi models. That is one great step up over the competition. Now I'll wait till after the 2011 CES information on new 3d tv developments (one about 3d tv's without glasses, and also 3d tv's using passive (inexpensive) 3d glasses (no emitter and expensive shutter glasses required)!!

Susana S 18 months ago

Yep, Mitsubishi are dong a great job of making sure that their 3D TV's are the most compatible on the market. It's funny really since a few months ago they were the least compatible! Anyhow, it's all good and will definitely improve sales for them.

John G 18 months ago

well I got the firmware upgrade and it has nothing to do with adding the 3D formats to my paticular 73833 model.I believe it just fixes minor net command issues so I will need the starter kit and since I would be running 3 sources of 3D - directv, xbox 360, and 3D player(if not panasonic) would also mean I would need a new reciever that does 3D pass through. that's just to much money to shell out to make Mitsu. Tv's work in my opinion. I have had two Mitsu 73" frustration is really taking its toll.atleast the info is getting out there and people can learn from our mistakes. great information Susana keep up the good work on educating us.

von 18 months ago

hi there! so just to sum it up very shortly, i will soon to have a mits 65" dlp 3d hdtv wd65638. I have a ps3, hdmi 1.3. so, the only thing im missing are the Mitsubishi 3DC-1000 3D HDTV Starter Pack? i know you said 1.4 hmdi but i dont think the ps3 can handle 1.4, do u know?

Susana S 18 months ago

Hi John, I'm sorry to hear that the upgrade they sent you was not 3D. That's a total bummer for you, but as you say others can learn from it. I hope you have better luck with 3D in the future!

Susana S 18 months ago

Hi Von, Yeah you'll need to get the mitsubishi starter kit, You'll also need the latest 3D firmware updates for your PS3 (3.30 & 3.50). The first update is for 3D gaming, the second for playing 3D blu ray. Part of this update ensures that your PS3 can handle HDMI 1.4.

von 18 months ago

oh i didnt know that handliing the hdmi 1.4 part. ok i understand now thanks. the only thing missing for my part is the $400! for the starter kit! i miscalculated because i didnt take account the price for that! :C oh well. anyway ur very helpful and knowledgeable.

Joe 18 months ago

Hey Von, I I'm in Arizona and I received a flier in the mail from AArons Rents showing they are selling the Mits 3dc-1000 3d starting pack. I just went today and bought one for $224! Hope this helps you save some money.

rxa777 17 months ago

just curious...The Mitsubishi 738 / 838 models are now selling at unbelievably low prices. Anyone out there own one and have upgraded the firmware? Has anyone tried connecting any 3d blu ray players without the use of the adaptor as the firmware claims possible? Susana, I too agree that Mitsubishi should be paying you. Hope you receive some form of thanks from sponsors on your really awesome site

Joe 17 months ago

Rxa777, I have the 738 and have upgraded the firmware. After I did that I turned on my PS3 and it recognized it was 3d. Works great, no issues. I did have to use the emitter with the 3dc-1000 starter pack. I did not have to use the converter box that came with it though.

rxa777 17 months ago

Thanks Joe, and hang on to that converter box, at this time, it is still necessary if you use Directv Satellite service and wish to view their 3d content. Good news is, you no longer need a converter for the satellite and another for a 3d blu ray player. This just keeps getting better and better!!!

Gunners_28 17 months ago

I just bought the WD60C10 Mitsubishi TV and I was just wondering if it was possible for me to connect my Dell Latitude/E6400 to it. I think I can do it by buying a VGA to HDMI converter but I was just wondering if there was a much cheaper way to to this? BTW great job while collecting all these information.

Susana S 17 months ago

Gunners thanks - I think the VGA to HDMI converter is the only way to go, but do check with the converter manufacturer that it will work with a DLP TV. I've read that some people have found they don't.

Think about what you want to do with this set up too. Assuming the converter works you should be able to stream TV from the internet, play PC games etc. but you won't be able to much in terms of 3D unless you buy extra software. And to be honest I'm not sure that your laptop could manage 3D anyway - it's certainly not compatible with nVidia geforce vision and I'm not sure it would work with cyberlink powerdvd 10 either.

I just ordered the call of duty black ops game for my ps3. I have a 3d ready tv (WD60C10 Mitsubishi TV). The only reason I bought the game was to try it out in a 3d mode. But the game's website says that "PlayStation 3 users need a television that supports a “top-bottom” or “over-under” 3D mode."

It would be a really good help if you tell me if the mitsubishi wd60c10 tv supports a top-bottom” or “over-under” 3d mode. Thanks.

Gunners_28 17 months ago

Hi again!! thanks for the tip about the converter.

My PS3 on my Mitsubishi tv wd60c10 is working fine (although the graphics are not as good as a 32 inch HDTV...It looks as if its a bit stretched) when connected to one of the HDMI ports. But when I tried connecting it to Input 1 or 2 through the regular port, I just got a black/blank screen. I tried connecting my phone (nokia N97) and my DVD player in those inputs through the same ports, I got a very blurry black and white, flickering image of what was supposed to be displayed.

IS THE TV I PURCHASED A WEEK BACK DAMAGED? Or am i doing something wrong while connecting the ps3/dvd player/phone to input 1 or 2. The HDMI seems to be working fine, the cable is working fine. It is just those 2 inputs thats giving me the porblem.

Any kind of suggestion would be highly appreciable.

thanks.

AMAZING HUB! Truly the most informative article on 3D connectivity for DLP TV's I've read, and I've looked. So Thank You!

Here is my configuration - WD-73738 Mitsubishi DLP TV, that's it. That's my whole system right now and that's still not even delivered yet - lol... But I want to get ready, so...

I Just ordered it from QVC for a stupid low price. After reading your hub I'm informed but need to replace my entire Home Theater System. Here is what I'm considering:

NEW Playstation 3 with the 3D upgrade. Figuring since this is a Sony and it is their flagship hardware... I'd use this as my Blu Ray & 3D player.

Onkyo TX-SR608 7.2 Receiver as the main hub since this is on sale everywhere.

Logitech Harmony One Advanced Remote to control the whole thing.

And I've read conflicting information from numerous sites on 3D glasses so I'm undecided on the XpanD's X102 OR X103 DLP link glasses OR the Optoma BG-ZD101 DLP Link 3D Glasses. All are around the same price so that's not an issue but I hear visually the picture or quality is different between the glasses.

Now come the questions:

Given the fact that Mitsubishi's WD-73738 now supports most of the popular formats for 3D

1. Frame Packing 1080p/24Hz *

2. Frame Packing 720p/60Hz *

3. Side-by-Side 1080i/60Hz *

4. Top-Bottom 1080p/24Hz *

5. Top-Bottom 720p/60Hz *

6. Side-by-Side 1080p/60Hz

7. Side-by-Side 1080p/24Hz

8. Side-by-Side 1080p/30Hz

9. Side-by-Side 720p/60Hz

10. Checkerboard 1080p/60Hz

* These formats are HDMI 1.4a 3D mandatory formats, all other formats are optional.

I plan to plug everything into my Onkyo HDMI 1.4a ports do I still need the 3DA1 Adapter for any reason?

Will all 3D formats play as crisp & clearly through the PS3 & Onkyo as if plugged directly into the TV or am I missing something?

Will I lose 3D picture quality because of the Onkyo receiver and it's up converting?

What 3D formats does the PS3 play/support/output?

Based on what you've read/heard or experienced first hand what would be your recommendation on glasses for this configuration.

Oh! that is assuming this configuration works.

Lastly, I've read checkerboard is not an optimal 3D format what is the optimal 3D format? And if the tv is set to auto detect format (assuming it has that feature) what determines what format is played, the receiver as the output source, the TV, the 3D player or the movie/game itself?

Thanks in advance for all of your help

I forgot to ask...

Or is there another receiver that I should be considering - keeping in mind the Onkyo is selling for $380 online?

Thanks Again

well....I'm back!!! I purchased the WD-73838 Dec. 12th., and after finding a low height level tv stand, I picked up the TV from the warehouse on Dec 23rd. Over the past three days, I've connected my Directv HD DVR, Phillips DVR, and a Sony Blu Ray player. I did not connect the adapter box. I was never able to connect the Mitsubishi USB wireless adapter with my "high caliber" Linksys wireless router. I borrowed my wireless lan adapter from my satellite receiver and was able to connect the Mitsubishi tv to the internet. (later bought a Netgear 5 port hub to connect both the satellite and the TV via my wireless lan adapter!!! (wireless lan adapter with short ethernet cable to the hub, and 2 ethernet cables from the hub ports to the satellite receiver and the tv) The Mitsubishi 838 model downloaded the 3d firmware upgrade automatically during one of the time periods the TV was turned off. (went from version 012.03 to 012.06) I placed a 3D movie into the Sony and set the TV to 3D mode (automatic) It worked great! Turned off the Sony and switched to the free 3D channel on the satellite. Again I set the TV to 3D mode...the tv had a side by side format picture. Automatic did not work, I picked the side by side TV mode choice and again, a great 3D picture. So I have answered my questions about the firmware upgrade making the Mitsubishi adapter unnecessary with models 738, 838, and future models. I'm one super happy camper...oh yes!

rxa777 17 months ago

forgot to mention, I have the satellite receiver, phillips dvr and the Sony 3D player connected directly to my surround sound system via coax and optical connecters (I like to control using the surround sound system seperately from the tv) Also, I found out that the 3D glasses in the 3D kit are made my Samsung and will work on both Samsung or Mitsubishi. You can carry your glasses to watch someones Samsung or visa-versa!!!

AND NOW: I found 3D glasses sold for $85. each (advertised as "for use with Mitsubishi or Samsung" sold at a Fry's Electronics store. (no store in your area? try the internet at fryselectronics.com) One last comment...the 3D Mitsubishi, like the Samsung or Panasonic Plasma, can be viewed at your comfortably desired head angle, even side-ways laying down on a sofa!! You can't do that with lcd, led tvs

Is the PS3 and the Mitsubishi 65inch 120Hz 1080p,3D ready H.D.M.I deep color (36-bit). The Model 730 2C65 is the T.V. Would really like to know

rxa777 17 months ago

for those of you looking into the low priced Mitsubishi TV's, I'll say this: the lower priced advertised models are able to play 3D using the adapter box. The latest models (year 2010 and future may cost nearly twice as much as low priced advertised sets in the 65, 73, 82 inch range. I saw 65 inch Mitsubishi TVs advertised at $1199, but found that they are the older models which can not be upgraded with the new 3D firmware. I paid just over $2100 for the WD-73838 model. Among the many advantages this and the 738 models have, today, when I turned on the Sony Blu Ray player and inserted a 3D disc, the TV went on simultaneously and showed various options to choose from including a BD icon which I selected (still using the Sony remote). The TV imediately set itself to play 3D!!! Is that not just great or what?? I didn't have to go through the tv input selection process. This is just one of the advantages available on the newer models for anyone considering a new Mitsubishi DLP. Mitsubishi is taking care of those that bought previous 3D Ready models by offering the 3DC-1000 adapter kit (adapter, emitter, glasses, and 3D movie preview disc)

Hi, This is a great hub. I've learned so much. I am getting a home theatre together over several months. I have the Panasonic DMP-BDT100 player, Boxee Box, and Logitech 1100 universal remote so far. I plan on having the Mits WD-65838 TV, Mits 3DC-1000 starter pack, Onkyo TX-sr608 and DirecTV DVR eventually. Are the 3D DLP Link glasses in the starter pack compatible with Optoma BG-2D101 glasses. I've read that the Optomas require a "reverse" setting, does this mean that they can't be used at the same time with the Mits glasses. Thanks a lot for all your excellent advise.

rxa 777 16 months ago

I've had the Mitsubishi 73838 for a month now! About two weeks ago, the Sony blu ray 3d player stopped playing in 3D. I thought I had a tv problem, but fortunately, since I also have Directv with available 3d programming (free on channel 103, and pay per view on two other channels) I found that I still had great 3d on the tv. I have since purchased a panasonic 3d blu ray player. Once you connect directly to the tv's hdmi ports and set the tv for the format that the satellite receiver or the blu ray player sends out, you can then switch to 3d mode automatic. The Mitsubishi memorizes the source input and automatically switches to 3d or back to 2d as necessary. I have not had to use an adaptor box to watch fantastic looking 3d. Directv is steadily adding new FREE 3d programs (some of the same that I have purchased...(15 HD3D discs as of now!!!) I was amazed at golf, basketball, and college football in 3D. The best description is that of looking through a large window and watching what looks like you are actually at the game in person. This tv has three levels of brightness: standard, bright, and brilliant. I have found that bright equals the color, sharpness, and brightness as that on my one year old 58" plasma tv. The tv automatically switches to brilliant to make up for using the 3D glasses for an amazingly beautiful picture quality. The tv switches back to your choice of standard or bright setting when not watching 3D. I am completely satisfied with having bought this model. I have occasionally watched streaming HD content via the internet and have to say I'm very impressed.

rxa777 16 months ago

to WTHORN: the current 3D starter pack comes with an infra-red emitter and glasses, not the link glasses. Check with Directv on the receiver necessary for 3D viewing. I didn't want to spend money on a new surround sound receiver, so I connected my satellite receiver, blu ray player, and hard drive dvr tuner via HDMI to the tv and each ones audio directly to the surround sound audio receiver via digital coax or optical cables. You are making a great choice with a 738 or 838 model Mitsubishi. Enjoy your new system. And again for those looking for lower priced glasses, I bought extra glasses at $89 each (available at fry.com) and a ac adaptor with two usb outs to charge the glasses (they hold a charge for a looooonnnnngggg time) I've used them on and off without recharging. These glasses work with the infra-red emitter set up that comes in the 3DC-1000 starter pack: 1 adaptor, 1 emitter, 1 HDMI cable, 2 glasses, and 1 movie previews 3D disc

Need some advice. I have the Mitsubishi 60735 TV, 3DA-1 adapter, a Playstation3 with the 3D firmware, and IR glasses from Dimensional Optics - Model:A1S01239. So I think I now need an IR emitter. Amazon has a SONY one for 38$ (TMR-BR100). Would this work with my setup? IF not, does anyone know where to get the correct emitter? Will this stuff all work together, or am I barking up the wrong tree. I am a bit confused with all this incompatibility.

Susana S 16 months ago

I'm not sure that a sony emitter will be compatible, but I think because it's an older mits model you'd be better off with XpanD's DLP link glasses, rather than the ones you have. You don't need an emitter with DLP link glasses.

I don't know if you can buy the mitsubishi emitter on it's own, but if you can and you want to stick with the glasses you have - do. Trying to mix up different manufacturers 3D equipment often just gives you a big headache and they will often not be compatible. Wherever possible get everything from the same manufacturer.

Carol 16 months ago

I just purchased a WD60639 DLP. I will not be using the 3D portion of the tv at this time. I understand I need an HDMI cable 1.4. I'm thinking about getting a Playstation 3 and wanted to know if this will enhance the tv in any way (I was told it will help blue-ray movies and I wouldn't need to purchase a blue-ray dvd). I only have basic cable but shortly will have at&t uverse put in but in the meantime do I need to purchase anything else other than the HDMI cable.

Carol 16 months ago

I gave the wrong model# for the tv it is WD60638, I'm sure you know that but I just wanted to make sure I corrected the information.

Susana S 16 months ago

Hi Carol,

Just the HDMI 1.4 cable will be all you need. At a later date if you decide you want to get into 3D then a PS3 is a good option, because you will be able to use it for 3D gaming and 3D blu ray movies (you would need the mitsubishi adpater + 3d glasses too).

Of course, if you just want a PS3 for regular blu ray movies then that's fine - it will do that, but you can get a standard BD player for a lot less.

So if you're thinking of using the 3d aspect of your TV later on, a PS3 is a great choice. If you doubt you'll use it, then I'd get a standard blu ray player.

tayho 15 months ago

Susana,

Thank you for all of the good information in this article. Some of it has changed (as you have noted) since the start due to the ever changing technologies of this one brand.

My question:

With a 738 series Mits(with the firmware upgrade), 1.4 HDMI cable, 3D Blu ray player, and Active shutter DLP 3d glasses, will I be able to watch 3d movies without adapter and emitter? My understanding is the adapter is built in on this model and the emitter is not needed because the glasses link through a white frame that is shown as part of the DLP picture.

Forgot to ask this part. Does the 3d blu ray player need to be a panasonic for this to work without the adapter box.

sean 15 months ago

I have the 638 version and have issues getting it to work properly with my PC.I read the instructions and checked on-line for similar issues to help troubleshoot. When I press power on my PC the picture is on and on while BIOS set up is taking place and still on while POST screen is on but when it boots into Windows,it goes blank.I let it sit for about 5 min then I reset PC and TV works in Safe mode but I cant do much in safe mode.Any suggestions??

tayho 15 months ago

Hey Sean,

This may be irrelevant for your problem but I had a similar problem. I was hooking up my computer via HDMI cable to my Sansui HD tv. I had the same issues you are describing. In Windows the TV was not even recognized as a display. I had a friend who is an IT tech check it out and he couldn't get it to work. He said sometimes the signals from video cards are just not compatible with some tv's. My video card was a Radeon HD4860. I got a different video card NVIDEA 460GTX and it recognized it and worked just fine. I am not going to go into all of the driver updates(not just the video card), workarounds, etc.. I tried with the Radeon but it just wouldn't work. Maybe there is a way to make a video card compatible but I wasn't able to find it. The new card worked first time, no issues. This may not have anything to do with your issue, but I thought I would share my experience.

Hi Susana.I bought a Mits-WD-65638 and bought recently a Panasonic SC-BT730 Blu-Ray Disc Home Theatre Sound System. I also have a DirecTV HD-DVR Box...I tried to Watch DirecTV Programs but I cannot hear the sounds on the Panasonic HOME Theatre Sound System SC-BT730. I am so upset... I'm using an audio cable. As of now, all i care about is how can i enjoy surround sound while watching movies from DirecTV with My Panasonic SC-BT730 hooked up on my Mits WD-65638? What are the thingsthat I need?

We're considering buying the WD-82738. We have Comcast cable and many of the posts talk about using Direct-TV. Does this TVw ork well with Comcast? I'm not nearly as well versed in technology as many of you are. Is there anything that I should make sure I consider before buying, And, in addition to the TV and what is included in the starter pak (3D glasses and blu-ray) is there anything else we MUST buy to have the absolute veiewing experinece?

tiffany 15 months ago

i think your hub is very helpful. I just bought the tv and all the acceseries i thought i needed i even asked the sales "expert" to make sure they were all compatible then i was told by a different sales "expert" that they arent. So ive turned to you is the sony 3d kit and shutter glasses compatible with my mitsubishi 3d tv and my playstation 3?

rxa777 15 months ago

I like to come back and read new information from other folks trying different things with the mitsu tv's. I've been using my 73838 model just over two months now. I now have a Directv hd dvr, Panasonic 3d blu ray player, and Phillips dvr connected directly to HDMI inputs on the TV. (no adaptor box) The emitter is plugged directly to the TV emitter out jack. I'm using the Mitsubishi usb wireless adaptor for internet access. I have connected the TV directly to my surround sound system so that I have eliminated having to select a components audio. I just turn the tv volume down and turn the surround sound system to a desired level. I have one video connection from the surround sound system to one of the tv's video inputs so I can watch on the tv screen any settings changes I might want to make on the Harmon Kardon 6 speaker surround sound system. I have five sets of 3D glasses of which only once have all five been used simultaneously when we had company over. I have 21 High def 3D movies and also another dozen 3D movies / commentary / or sports programs recorded on the satellite hd dvr. Granted, we watch mostly regular 2D tv programming, but when we feel like it, watching 3D on this hugh screen so enjoyable. I have chosen the bright screen setting for general TV viewing. The TV sets itself to brilliant to compensate for using the glasses with 3D. Hope all you out there get answers to the questions on your particular setup. Susana and other folks using this site have done a great job helping each other....keep it up!!!

Mits 60738 DLP 3DTV

Sony BDP S570 3D bluray

HDMI cables 1.4, through Buy.com 3 pack for 7.99

AV Receiver Pioneer VSX-520

DLP 3D glasses with emmiter, purchased 4 pack w/ emmiter through Buy.com for 195.00

This system works great for 3D bluray movies. You don't need the receiver except for surround audio. The receiver must have HDMI 1.4 capability(as this low end pioneer does) to use for 3D bluray. You might be able to work around this problem with the optical or RCA digital out to the reciever, and the HDMI straight to the TV, haven't tried it.

The 3d picture is great and the surround sound adds to the effect.

Problems I encountered:

The 3D bluray player wouldn't play 3D it said something in the system wasn't compliant. I contacted Sony and found out my issue was the HDMI setting was on Auto but it needed to be on 1080P. A glitch in the Sony 3D bluray player.

The only other issue was I had to set the 3D emmiter output on the TV to reverse for the glasses to work.

The 3D is stunning, though the glasses get tiresome after awhile.

I should mention my 60738 came with the 3D firmware upgrade 012.06 already installed, you will need to update the firmware if you don't have that version or higher.

I had to update the firmware on the Sony to make it 3D compatible. That was simple through Wireless internet, mine took about three updates to get it current.

Hope this helps.

I noticed in your post, that you said that nvidia's 9500 gt video card is compatible with mitsubishi 65837. My problem is that normal video from my computer is jerky and freezes. It doesn't do that with my lcd tv nor my old rear projection crt. My computer also meets the minimum requirements you posted. If the mitsubishi dlp won't play regular video can I count on it playing 3D? I have scoured the internet for a solution to this problem to no avail and mitsubishi is no help either.

Susana S 10 months ago

Hi Roger,

Of the 9 series of nvidia cards 9600 GT is the minimum I believe. I'd head on over to the nvidia webite and check the 3D Vision requirements for yourself though: http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d-vision-requirement

While you're there it might be worth checking to see if there are any updates for your graphics card as that might solve your other issue.

I have the Mits WD65737 and I am looking at getting setup with 3D. I want to get the Sony BDP-S580, because of the apps and Apple iOS integration, but I cannot tell if it is CheckerBoard format compatible (don't want to use the Mits Adapter). Is this Sony 3D BluRay compatible, or should I just go with a Pany BDT210?

Tayho 7 months ago

Ray, I have the Mits WD60738 and the Sony BDP-S570. The firmware upgrade for the wd60738 allows it to work in all the formats. I don't believe the 737 models can have their firmware upgraded, unless Mit's has made some recent changes. So I think your options are the Panasonic or the adapter. It's worth giving Mit's a call to see if there is another workaround.

Ray T 7 months ago

Thansk for the response Tayho. Last week, I ended up getting a Pany BDT210, along with Avatar 3D and MegaMind 3D for $160 total. It has a option to manually set to Checker Board in the settings, so that was easy. I like the app selection with the Sony a bit better, but with 100% guaranteed support and free BluRays, it was a no-brainer. Now I just need to either get some DLPLink glasses or get an emitter that works with my brother's already purchased Panasonic IR glasses. This thread was REALLY helpful between the body and also all the comments.

@ 3d frustration

If you have a 3D ready Mitsubishi television made in 2007, 2008 or 2009...then you will need to set your tv up with a special adapter. Your television was designed to display 3d with "checkerboard" and blu ray and other and Direct TV don't display in "checkerboard".

You need an adapater and active shutter glasses along with an emitter.

Don 5 months ago

I was about to purchase a WD-73738 as it has many features that are upgrades from the new 2011 models(WD-640, 740, and 840). However the new models do NOT need the "adapter as the 2010 (738) models do. I am seeing that these 2010 models are now being hard to find as many of the stores in the last few days now say they are "no longer available". This makes me think that Mitsubishi is about to launch new 2012 replacements for the 2010 models like the 738 I was about to purchase. Have you heard anything about that? Should I wait to see if they are going to introduce a "new" model with all the bells and whistles of the current 738 but NOT needing the extra gizmo/"adapter"? Or should I go ahead and get a 738 before they all dissappear? Seenms like they are way nicer with better and more features than the 2011 (640, 740, etc.) ones are, yet those are priced about at the same level or higher.

Seems like they ARE about to introduce a 738 equililent, or better, that will NOT need an adapter.

What are your thoughts?

Hi, I have a problem with my 3d kit I recently purchased. I have a 65 inch Mitsubishi 3d ready tv. I recently purchased the xpand 3d kit. 1 emitter and 1 pair of glasses. I also bought 4 extra pair of glasses and the Mitsubishi adapter. I hooked it up and it worked perfect from the start. No problems. But a week later I try to watch a 3d movie and ALL the glasses are flickering and changing colors. Im not sure what's wrong. Can anyone help?

Tauho 5 months ago

James,

Try changing the emmiter setting on the TV to reverse. Not sure if this is your problem but my glasses won't work unless the emmiter is set to reverse.

tayho 5 months ago

James,

Try switching the emmiter on your tv to reverse, (you change it in the tv menu with your remote) My 3d glasses only work when the emmiter is on reverse. The other thing might be the 3d format is set wrong, auto should work, but you could try the other settings.(this is also in the tv menu).

ok I have a Mit DLP WD-57734 1080P TV. Can I just buy the Mitsumishi 3D starter kit with the adapter to convert my images from my 3D Blue Ray and get 3D display?

Also, I bought a 2D to 3D convert box from Amazon. Do these do the same thing? It says it will convert 2D to 3D on may to most display TV's. Please help anyone!!!

Love it. Everyone almost fell to the floor when they came here in December. the were astounded at the size and the picture. We have the 82738. I saw some comments about 738 series above needing an adapter. I was told by Mit that was not true. It is a 3D TV. Just needed DLP glasses, or the IR Emitter 3D glasses. One rep recommended the emitter as they are better. We purchased xpand with emitter, and 3 additional glasses. Again we were told the adapter not required. Our menu does have choices for 3d, from auto, 2 split ones, and checkerboard. Recommendation was auto. Seems to be good. Some fast movements were a little blurry in the blue ray we watched 'Nightmare before christmas'. otherwise excellent. Better with all lights turned off. My nephew thought a little annoying compared to theaters. But I think the size of the screen in the movie theater compared to the TV might be issue. To me 150% better than what I remember 3D to be.

It depends on which model of mits 3D TV you have. You'll certainly need active shutter 3D glasses, 3D content (games/Blu Ray/3D TV channel), your PS3 firmware updates up to date, if you have an older model of 3D TV you'll need the Mitsubishi adapter too.
