Enjoy Free Ebooks From the Gutenberg Project

Since the arrival of the internet in the early 90's the Gutenberg Project has been on an altruistic mission to create and distribute free ebooks to anyone who wants them in the simplest etext formats available. Yes, that's right - all the ebooks available on the Gutenberg Project website are absolutely free and gratis. Unusual in our modern age, the Gutenberg Project is a "not for profit" organization that relies on volunteers and donations to sustain itself. So while you'll still need to purchase a portable ebook reader, you can get hundreds of ebooks absolutely free.

With a variety of download formats available Gutenberg Project ebooks are totally compatible with your Kindle, iPad, Nook or other ereading device.

Accessibility and Equality to information define the essence of what the Gutenberg Project is all about. Talking about his philosophy of the Gutenberg Project, the founder Michael Hart, (who actually invented ebooks in 1971), says, "The Project Gutenberg Etexts should so easily be used that no one should ever have to care about how to use, read, quote and search them." In other words Michael is saying that information should be free to all and subsequently used in any way that the individual chooses to use it - no limits - no rules - no directive.

These sentences in their mission statement clearly sum up the Gutenberg Project approach:

  • "Project Gutenberg is powered by ideas, ideals, and by idealism."
  • "Project Gutenberg is not powered by financial or political power."

The Gutenberg Project is maintained by volunteers who proofread and transcribe the original texts into various e-formats including ePub, HTML, Mobipocket and other simple text formats such as PDF.

Read Your Gutenberg Project Ebooks on an Ereader

All of the Gutenberg Project ebooks are compatible with the ebook reading devices on this page.  The ereader is quickly becoming the new must have piece of technology for those of us that love reading and love books.

Ebook Readers - What Are They?

Ebook readers are portable storage devices that allow you to download, store and read your favourites books whereever you are. You might think it would be hard to read using an ereader if you are comparing it to the experience of reading from a computer, but most ereaders have anti glare screens that are actually easier to read than ordinary paper books.

There are also some really cool features available on some e-readers that you'll never find in paper books, particularly on Amazon's Kindle e-readers such as:

  • Try Before You Buy - Read the first few chapters to see if you like a book before you buy it.
  • Read to Me - Have your book, newspaper, webpage or magazine read out loud to you.
  • Download Books Wirelessly and Instantly from nearly anywhere in the world.
  • Lightweight and Slim Design - an ereader weighs less than most conventional paper books.

Hello, Susana, and I read with interest you hub. As much as we would to safe but will it be for the writers? Will they in future write non-stop for nothing. I am sorry but writers work extremely hard and a book wants to be written. I am sorry and hate to be negative but I don't think it is fair on the writers. Thank you for a very interesting hub and advice non-the-less.

Hi Hello Hello - I understand your point of view but I think you're misunderstanding the concept - for recently written books it's up to the writer themselves if they want to share their work for free, so no one is being taken advantage of.

The vast majority of the writers of the books available for free download at the Gutneberg Project have been written by long dead writers and the only people that still make money from them are publishing houses. All of the ebooks are also in the "public domain" in the US, which means the copyright has expired. Books don't go into the public domain until 50 years after they were published. In my view it's an extremely ethical way of sharing knowledge.

Anyhow, I do appreciate your comments as always :)

Thanks for the nice hub. I recently found ebooks off of stumbleupon, I don't know if they are the same ones, since I don't know stumbleupon well yet.

There is something very comforting about holding a real paper book. But the scads of books I have are heavy and *hard to move*.

I might be interested in the Kindle device at some point, but only when the price comes down. Hard times here, y'know?

Hi Susana - A very useful article. I have used Gutenberg for many years now, and it is getting better and better. Used to be that "all" a person could get there were scanned copies of books, papers, etc. in plain ASCII text. More recently there are plenty of works in HTML which,of course, allows downloading of illustrations, and more. We "translated" a number of Gutenberg files into PDF format so you can download some of them as E-books. Check out the download books section of http://www.sampsonafb.com. Some big books and some tiny books. For free as noted.

Hy Susana, I have also been a longtime fan of Gutenberg, it's got a huge array of books on lots of subjects, I even have some of the ones you listed here. The poetry collection is good too. And all free! Thanks for spreading the Gospel about this site (I briefly mentioned it in my software hub - but yours is more detailed!!!) - and congrats on being viewed over 100,000 times by people here! You rock!!!

My personal pro and con for e-readers.

Pro - If you find a book you want and just HAVE to have while doing research on books at 11 o clock at night, and you can't wait for shipping, you can download said book.

Con - digital media is unreliable. Files become corrupted, computers get lost, electronics get damaged, and suddenly all the money you've spent on the eReader and those books are gone.

However, Project Gutenberg might make it worth it...

A great hub about a wonderful resource. "Lear out Loud" is also a great resource which provides the same service for audio books though they do also sell some books. This might be an idea for your next hub. Great stuff. Thank you.
