Help Insomnia with Aromatherapy

For mild and/or temporary bouts of insomnia aromatherapy oils are a great option. If you've never used aromatherapy oils or you're wondering how on earth an oil can help with insomnia, then you need to be aware that essential oils can be extremely potent. Many essential oils must not be used by pregnant women or children because of their well documented powerful properties.

The best ways to use aromatherapy oils to treat insomnia are:

  • Use 10 drops of essential oil in a warm bath before bed (don't use any bubble bath or body wash as these break the oils down and will inhibit absorbtion by the skin).
  • Mix 6 drops of essential oil with 15 ml carrier oil and massage into the body.

Best Aromatherapy Oils to Help Insomnia

Frankincense Essential Oil

You may remember the smell of frankincense oil from church as it's often used in religious ceremonies. It's a deeply relaxing oil and is a wonderful stress reliever. Frankincense oil, calms and soothes and is brilliant for treating mild insomnia. Safe for use by Pregnant women and children.

Lavender Essential Oil

Another wonderfully relaxing oil, lavender is the perfect choice to relieve temporary sleeplessness or frequent night waking. Safe for use by Pregnant women, children and babies.

Sandalwood Essential Oil

Sandalwood essential oil has a powerful sedative effect. While a bit more expensive than the other oils here, it's worth buying if you suffer from chronic insomnia. Use it every evening as described above and within a few days you'll start enjoying the uninterrupted sleep you long for. Safe for use by Pregnant women and children.

Sweet Marjorma Essential Oil

Sweet marjoram is one of my favorite essential oils to treat insomnia and also migraine. It has an extremely powerful hypnotic effect and is wonderful for inducing sleep. Because sweet marjoram is so powerful, caution must be applied to use it safely. Do make sure you use it before bed and not when you have to drive or do anything that requires your full concentration. Also make sure you do not use it for more than 5 days in a row.

**Sweet marjoram is a powerful essential oil and should not be used on children under 12 years old, if you are (or suspect you are) pregnant or if you have low blood pressure.**

Herbal Remedies for Insomnia

For longer term or chronic insomnia, choosing a herbal remedy to use instead of, or in conjunction with, one of the essential oils above, is a very wise move. Using both together will ensure a good night's sleep tonight. This is because some of the herbal remedies take a few days to start working, as their active ingredients need to build up in your system.

All of the herbal products shown here have been given excellent customer reviews from the many people that use them and they can all be trusted to do what they say on the box. There are a variety of herbal ingredients in the remedies on the right, that are all renowned for their powerful sleep inducing properties. They include:

  • Valerian Root
  • Passion Flower
  • Chamomile
  • Melatonin
