77An Easy, Natural Home Cough Remedy
Cedarwood essential oil is a fabulous home cough remedy, which utilizes the benefits of aromatherapy and it works superbly for any kind of cough. Whether it be a lingering cough, bronchitis, coughing due to asthma, or coughing due to viruses and colds, using cedarwood oil will help clear them up quickly and easily.
There are several types of cedarwood essential oil - Cedrus Atlantica, Cedrus Deodara, Juniperus Mexicana or Juniperus Virginiana which all come from various varieties of Cedar tree. Any of these cedarwood oils can be used for this home cough remedy, though personally I always buy Juniperus Virginiana.
**Cedarwood essential oil is powerful and should be completely avoided in pregnancy and not used on children under 5 years old. It can also cause a possible skin sensitivity, so if it's your first time using this aromatherapy oil just use half of the recommended amount.**

To treat your cough or bronchitis at home, it's best to use cedarwood essential oil in the bath or through a chest massage. My preferred technique is to use it like a vapor rub on the chest and back everyday until the cough has gone. To prepare the oil for massage, use 5-10 drops of essential oil to 15ml of carrier oil (such as sweet almond oil) for an adult. For children over 5 years old, use half the adult dose, so 3-5 drops per 15ml of carrier oil.
There's no need to know any particular massage techniques to use cedarwood oil as a home cough remedy. Little by little, simply rub half the amount of oil (essential oil plus carrier oil) into the back and half into the chest area, until it has all been absorbed by the skin. If you are on your own and are unable to use the oil on your back, just rub it all into your chest. This is best done after a bath or before bed, so that the oils have a chance to work their magic. Cedarwood oil is also very relaxing so it will also help you get a good night's sleep.
If you prefer to use the cedarwood oil in a bath, use 10 drops for an adult and 5 for children over 5. Put the oil in bath once bath has run and don't use any bubble bath or body wash as this will break the oil down and you will not get the full benefits of the cedarwood oil. Relax in your bath and enjoy the lovely scent of the cedarwood.
Have a look at the range of cedarwood essential oils at Amazon, you won't get a better price or better quality anywhere else.
Other Benefits of Cedarwood Oil
Cedarwood essential oil is a fantastic home cough remedy but it also has several other beneficial effects including:
- Mildly diuretic so it's good for urinary infections and water retention
- Respiratory infections such as colds and viruses
- Aphrodisiac

If you or your children are prone to coughs then having some cedarwood essential oil at home is an extremely good idea. It's a cheap and easy home cough remedy that really works wonders, especially for those lingering coughs that will just not go away.
