Finding Long Tail Keywords Through Effective Keyword Research

Keywords, keyphrases, niche keywords, long tail keywords, keyword research – you will undoubtedly have come across all of these phrases in your quest for success making money online. Yet of all of these phrases, the one that could be the most profitable for you to be aware of is “long tail keywords”. Here we're going to look at why they are essential and how to find them using Google's Wonder Wheel - a free keyword research tool.

Find Long Tail Keywords for Higher Conversion Rates

There’s no getting around the fact that choosing the correct keywords and long tail keyphrases is the cornerstone of success for any website or blog. Why? Because firstly, you want your website to be highly visible in the search engines, and additionally, you want your visitors to click, purchase, or sign up. Long tail keywords also tend to have far fewer competing websites than one or two word keyphrases (e.g. "work") which means they are far easier to rank for.

To understand how utilizing long tail keywords improve conversion rates you need to understand how people search when they use search engines such as Google, Bing or Yahoo, and also how their searches relate to a persons readiness to buy or sign up.

In general, the longer the keyphrase typed into a search engine the more likely your visitor is to make a purchase or sign up. To illustrate, let’s look at an example of this phenomenon in action.

________________________________________________________________

Bob’s Search Behavior

Let's take the example of Bob. Bob has recently been made redundant from work and is looking for work at home opportunities. This is typical of the kind of search behavior he will exhibit:

First Search – home work

Second Search - work online

Third Search – working from home

Fourth Search – legitimate work at home jobs

Fifth Search – where to write online to make money

The first few searches tend to be general and for the purpose of information gathering. Bob may click on a few ads to get more information, but what he’s more likely to do is go back to the search engine and perform another search. As Bob continues on his search for work at home jobs, his searches become more and more specific, until he finds exactly what he is looking for. This is especially true in Bob's situation because he will have to wade through A LOT of crap before he finds something that actually meets his need to find real work at home jobs.

________________________________________________________________

Ensure Your Website, Blog or Article Meets These Fundamental Requirements

At the point that your searcher is typing in 3 or more words (a long tail keyword), as long as your website or blog meets the following requirements your visitors are primed and ready to sign up or make a purchase.

1. The Landing Page Answers Their Query

2. The Website Looks Professional

3. The Website Is Easy To Navigate

4. It’s Obvious to Your Visitor How to Purchase or Sign Up

5. You Have Provided “A Call to Action”

Typically, long tail keywords attract less search volume than broader search terms but - and it’s a big but - they result in higher conversions. If your website or blog targets long tail keywords, what you will get are qualified customers that want exactly what you are offering. I find this is particularly true on pages where you want to earn selling products such as through the amazon affiliate program

So let's go back to Bob and his last search of "where to write online to make money". If you have created a content page answering this query, with a short review of each writing site and a link to each, all of which include your affiliate link, you can bet that Bob will sign up for a few. And with a bit of luck Bob will start making you some money soon!

Find Profitable Long Tail Keywords Using Google's Wonder Wheel

One way of finding long tail keywords to implement in your SEO strategy and marketing campaign, is to use Google’s Wonder Wheel tool. Why not try the Wonder Wheel now? Open a new window and follow these easy instructions.

How to use Google's Wonder Wheel - An Easy Tutorial

1. Simply type a general search term into Google’s search box, such as Bob’s first search query of “home work”.

2. Then click on “Show options”, which you’ll find to the left of the search results.

3. Scroll down to where is says “standard view” and click on Wonder Wheel.

4. You will now see a wheel type diagram of related searches. Click on one of the branches and you will be taken to a second diagram which shows typical “deeper” or longer tail keyword searches.

You can keep going with the wonder wheel to find a variety of potential highly profitable long tail keyword searches. If you like to learn visually, use the screen shots below to learn how to use Google's Wonder Wheel to find long tail keywords.

________________________________________________________________

1. Type a Search Term and Click Show Options

Click "Show options"
Click "Show options"

2. Click on Wonder Wheel

Now Click on Wonder Wheel
Now Click on Wonder Wheel

3. Click on the Wheel's Links to See Related Searches

Assess The Search Results Before Choosing Your Long Tail Keywords

In the image above (number 3) you'll see that the first page of search results are shown on the right of the screen whic is one of the best things about Google's Wonder Wheel. Make sure that you look at the search results for each long tail keyword string that you've clicked on.

See how many pages (if any) are using the exact keyword string. If no one is using the exact phrase in their title and page description then this could be a very profitable phrase for you. Conversely, if many pages are using the exact long tail keyphrase in their title and description then you'll need to check the pages PageRank to determine if you can compete with them. We'll have a look at assessing the potential of the long tail keywords you find in a moment.

4. The Deeper You Go, the Longer the Keyphrases

The Deeper into the Wonder Wheel You Get the Longer the Keyphrases Become

Need Help Assessing Competition?

I've found Market Samurai to offer the best software for quickly and accurately assessing the strength of competition from other webpages. Personally, I can't live without it!

If you fancy giving it a try, it's free for 7 days and then if you like it you can pay the one time $97 fee. It's the best $97 you'll ever spend if you're serious about earning online.

Assessing Long Tail Keywords

Once you have a list of possible long tail keywords, it’s simply a case of typing them one by one into Google’s keyword tool to discover how many searches are being performed monthly for each keyword string. You'll probably also want to look at the estimated CPC. Once you’ve done this:

1. Choose the long tail keywords that are receiving the highest search volumes (and highest CPC).

2. If you have not done so already, check each one of your potential long tail keywords in the search engine you want your page to rank in to establish which, (if any) other pages are using them.

3. Assess your ability to compete with any other pages you identify. E.g. how many pages are using that exact long tail keyphrase? If there are no other pages in competition with you (or only a few), it will be an excellent long tail keyphrase to use. If other pages are using the particular long tail keyphrase you’ve chosen, assess the pages authority in terms of PageRank and compare it to your own.

4. If your long tail keyphrase is a suitable candidate to draw qualified traffic to your website, then optimize your page for that long tail term.

5. If you feel the competition for the particular term is too strong, go back to your list and find another to assess. Repeat the process until you have found long tail keywords you feel confident about ranking highly for.

_________________________________________________________________

And Finally...

So there we are. We have covered the basics of why long tail keywords are important for a successful online business. We've looked at one easy way of finding the best long tail keywords related to your market using Google's wonder wheel and we’ve also learned how to assess them. It’s now merely a case of putting this information into action through your marketing and SEO strategy and watching your conversion rates soar.

Very useful information about the Wonder Wheel tool. Long tail keywords can be very profitable. However, keep in mind that "long tail" does not mean "long phrase". Rather, it refers to less frequently searched terms which, when you have a lot of them, add up to a great deal of traffic. These often are longer, more specific phrases, though, so the info you give is still very useful.

Susana S profile image

Susana S Hub Author 2 years ago

Hi Findyoursearch - I'd define a long tail keyphrase as any search term over 3 words and they aren't necessarily poor in terms of traffic, so I'd have to disagree with you on that point. My top 2 articles for traffic are both optimized for long tail keywords - one has a 4 word string, the other has 9 words. The first one gets between 600-800 views per day and the second 400-500 views per day. So long tail doesn't = low traffic.

Great find and great article. When you are trying to pick a term or phrase to use, is there a golden number (of results) you look for? Like what number do you shoot for? 5,000 results, 10,000 results? Obviously, you don't want something with a million results.....

Susana S profile image

Susana S Hub Author 22 months ago

Hi jb - no no golden number. I don't usually look at the number of results - I look at the number of searches per month in the keyword tool and if it's high enough, then I'll look at the top 10 pages in the results to see if they're beatable. The phrase could produce millions of results, but it doesn't mean you can't rank for it.

Don't make the mistake of aiming too low. Read this hub by Misha: http://hubpages.com/hub/Google-Keyword-Tool-Redefi

I did the Wonder Wheel for one Hub and tested it out - it's in the 70's, but over time it will grow as long as my content is original and my keywords are relevant.

there's no wonder wheel option in the new google layout :(

Susana S profile image

Susana S Hub Author 18 months ago

It is there (at least it is on google.com and google.co.uk). You have to type in a search term first, hit return, then on the left you'll see "more search tools" - the wonderwheel is under there.

Hi Bard - You're welcome and I hope you can use the info here on long tail keywords to bring in the money for you! I also use google's search assist a lot now for finding good phrases - if you haven't already read it I would definitely recommend Misha's hub about it.

thanks so much Susana - I've recently come back to hubpages (working 27/7 in the holiday trade)and feel like I've forgotten the little bit I did learn when I first started. Your hubs are so informative and much easier to understand than anything else I've read.

I'm going to follow you like a stalker until I master this SEO thing! - if that's ok with you

Hello!

I was referred to your hub by livewithrichard in a forum post. This is a lot of information, so I've bookmarked it for future reference.

As far as Amazon Affiliates program goes, Pfffftt!! As a California resident, I've just been unceremoniously dumped from that!

Google, on the other hand, I struggle with continually. The more I read, the more it seems targeted to articles/websites actively engaged in selling or pushing a particular product or service.

I have zero interest in that aspect--I don't want to try and sell anyone anything. I only want to write, and hopefully write interesting/informative/educational articles that folks want to read--and--hope that Google places appropriate ads that might inspire a related click-through.

I have no illusions about making thousands..but it would be nice to at least reach the payout threshhold each month! That would be a helpful extra bit of cash..

Bookmarked, voted up, useful and interesting. Thanks for sharing this info.

Susana S Hub Author 10 months ago

Hi Lizzy :)

Glad you found my hub useful. Google's wonder wheel is no more, but you can still use google's keyword tool to find keywords related to your article idea. Keywords are important no matter what you want to write about - we have to match what we want to write about with what people search for - if we want traffic.

Here's an example: I just looked at your board games remembered hub. I bet there are a whole lot more people who type the phrase "retro board games" into search engines compared to "board games remembered". I suggest going to the keyword tool and having a look. While you're there you might find an even better phrase!

Just by using a different (but highly related) phrase throughout the hub (including title, summary, first paragraph, plus in the body text a few times) a dead hub can become one that gets traffic and earnings.

But why should we have to do that? Just remember that google is a machine, a mathematical algorithm - we as writers have to tell google what to rank our page for in the search results. It can't work it out itself.

Excellent information! Finding long tail keyword phrases that you can actually rank for makes all the difference. You cannot simply write article after article and hope to get a winner, you need to know what phrases have low competition and lots of searches per month.

Any alternative to wonder wheel, I wonder why Google discontinued it. I tried related searches but its not giving any relevant suggestions, anyhow a great hub but unfortunately Timed Out.

Susana S profile image

Susana S Hub Author 4 months ago

I use google search assist quite a bit for long tail keyword ideas now that the wonder wheel is defunct, and of course I still use the adwords keyword tool. Google insights is another option that I have used in the past to look for rising searches.
