Find Long Tail Keywords with Google Wonder Wheel - Easy Tutorial
79Finding Long Tail Keywords Through Effective Keyword Research
Keywords, keyphrases, niche keywords, long tail keywords, keyword research – you will undoubtedly have come across all of these phrases in your quest for success making money online. Yet of all of these phrases, the one that could be the most profitable for you to be aware of is “long tail keywords”. Here we're going to look at why they are essential and how to find them using Google's Wonder Wheel - a free keyword research tool.
Knowing how to find and assess long tail keywords for top search results, marketing and SEO purposes, will take your online money making business to the next level and ensure that your traffic, and more importantly, your conversion rates, increase. So finding and using long tail keywords is an important aspect of any website or blog owners marketing strategy and SEO campaign.
Here you’ll find explained:
- The benefits of using long tail keywords to increase traffic and conversion rates
- Useful information on how searchers behave when using search engines
- The essential elements your website needs to make the conversion from visitor to sale
- One place on the web to find long tail keywords (Google's Wonder Wheel)
- How to assess long tail keywords once you’ve found them

Find Long Tail Keywords for Higher Conversion Rates
There’s no getting around the fact that choosing the correct keywords and long tail keyphrases is the cornerstone of success for any website or blog. Why? Because firstly, you want your website to be highly visible in the search engines, and additionally, you want your visitors to click, purchase, or sign up. Long tail keywords also tend to have far fewer competing websites than one or two word keyphrases (e.g. "work") which means they are far easier to rank for.
To understand how utilizing long tail keywords improve conversion rates you need to understand how people search when they use search engines such as Google, Bing or Yahoo, and also how their searches relate to a persons readiness to buy or sign up.
In general, the longer the keyphrase typed into a search engine the more likely your visitor is to make a purchase or sign up. To illustrate, let’s look at an example of this phenomenon in action.
________________________________________________________________
Bob’s Search Behavior
Let's take the example of Bob. Bob has recently been made redundant from work and is looking for work at home opportunities. This is typical of the kind of search behavior he will exhibit:
First Search – home work
Second Search - work online
Third Search – working from home
Fourth Search – legitimate work at home jobs
Fifth Search – where to write online to make money
The first few searches tend to be general and for the purpose of information gathering. Bob may click on a few ads to get more information, but what he’s more likely to do is go back to the search engine and perform another search. As Bob continues on his search for work at home jobs, his searches become more and more specific, until he finds exactly what he is looking for. This is especially true in Bob's situation because he will have to wade through A LOT of crap before he finds something that actually meets his need to find real work at home jobs.
________________________________________________________________
Ensure Your Website, Blog or Article Meets These Fundamental Requirements
At the point that your searcher is typing in 3 or more words (a long tail keyword), as long as your website or blog meets the following requirements your visitors are primed and ready to sign up or make a purchase.
1. The Landing Page Answers Their Query
2. The Website Looks Professional
3. The Website Is Easy To Navigate
4. It’s Obvious to Your Visitor How to Purchase or Sign Up
5. You Have Provided “A Call to Action”
Typically, long tail keywords attract less search volume than broader search terms but - and it’s a big but - they result in higher conversions. If your website or blog targets long tail keywords, what you will get are qualified customers that want exactly what you are offering. I find this is particularly true on pages where you want to earn selling products such as through the amazon affiliate program.
So let's go back to Bob and his last search of "where to write online to make money". If you have created a content page answering this query, with a short review of each writing site and a link to each, all of which include your affiliate link, you can bet that Bob will sign up for a few. And with a bit of luck Bob will start making you some money soon!

Find Profitable Long Tail Keywords Using Google's Wonder Wheel
One way of finding long tail keywords to implement in your SEO strategy and marketing campaign, is to use Google’s Wonder Wheel tool. Why not try the Wonder Wheel now? Open a new window and follow these easy instructions.
How to use Google's Wonder Wheel - An Easy Tutorial
1. Simply type a general search term into Google’s search box, such as Bob’s first search query of “home work”.
2. Then click on “Show options”, which you’ll find to the left of the search results.
3. Scroll down to where is says “standard view” and click on Wonder Wheel.
4. You will now see a wheel type diagram of related searches. Click on one of the branches and you will be taken to a second diagram which shows typical “deeper” or longer tail keyword searches.
You can keep going with the wonder wheel to find a variety of potential highly profitable long tail keyword searches. If you like to learn visually, use the screen shots below to learn how to use Google's Wonder Wheel to find long tail keywords.
________________________________________________________________
1. Type a Search Term and Click Show Options
2. Click on Wonder Wheel
3. Click on the Wheel's Links to See Related Searches
Assess The Search Results Before Choosing Your Long Tail Keywords
In the image above (number 3) you'll see that the first page of search results are shown on the right of the screen whic is one of the best things about Google's Wonder Wheel. Make sure that you look at the search results for each long tail keyword string that you've clicked on.
See how many pages (if any) are using the exact keyword string. If no one is using the exact phrase in their title and page description then this could be a very profitable phrase for you. Conversely, if many pages are using the exact long tail keyphrase in their title and description then you'll need to check the pages PageRank to determine if you can compete with them. We'll have a look at assessing the potential of the long tail keywords you find in a moment.
4. The Deeper You Go, the Longer the Keyphrases
Need Help Assessing Competition?
I've found Market Samurai to offer the best software for quickly and accurately assessing the strength of competition from other webpages. Personally, I can't live without it!
If you fancy giving it a try, it's free for 7 days and then if you like it you can pay the one time $97 fee. It's the best $97 you'll ever spend if you're serious about earning online.
Assessing Long Tail Keywords
Once you have a list of possible long tail keywords, it’s simply a case of typing them one by one into Google’s keyword tool to discover how many searches are being performed monthly for each keyword string. You'll probably also want to look at the estimated CPC. Once you’ve done this:
1. Choose the long tail keywords that are receiving the highest search volumes (and highest CPC).
2. If you have not done so already, check each one of your potential long tail keywords in the search engine you want your page to rank in to establish which, (if any) other pages are using them.
3. Assess your ability to compete with any other pages you identify. E.g. how many pages are using that exact long tail keyphrase? If there are no other pages in competition with you (or only a few), it will be an excellent long tail keyphrase to use. If other pages are using the particular long tail keyphrase you’ve chosen, assess the pages authority in terms of PageRank and compare it to your own.
4. If your long tail keyphrase is a suitable candidate to draw qualified traffic to your website, then optimize your page for that long tail term.
5. If you feel the competition for the particular term is too strong, go back to your list and find another to assess. Repeat the process until you have found long tail keywords you feel confident about ranking highly for.
_________________________________________________________________
And Finally...
So there we are. We have covered the basics of why long tail keywords are important for a successful online business. We've looked at one easy way of finding the best long tail keywords related to your market using Google's wonder wheel and we’ve also learned how to assess them. It’s now merely a case of putting this information into action through your marketing and SEO strategy and watching your conversion rates soar.

Great Hub. Nicely pulled together. Thank you. I don't know about you though but my Google changed from "Show options" just today. Now it reads "more" and for the wonder wheel "more search tools". Don't you hate it when they do things like that.
Ive been using the wonder wheel for a while now and have found it really useful. I can see you are utilising the fire fox shot really well... Im just trying to grapple with that one. Wonderful hub S :)
Thanks SS - bookmarked, I continue to learn to earn. Excellent hub, superb work.
Well, learn something new everyday!
I can't believe I'd never heard of this before. It's going to be a great help in optimizing my hubs *before* I write them (for a change) :D

Susana this is great. Really, really helpful.
I linked to this hub you in a recent article as I felt you had explained the topic far better than I could.
Stellar work, you have helped a lot of people with this information.
hmm..sorry about typos above, netbook, little keyboard, sensitive touchpad, its always happening to me.
Very helpful
thanks
great information Susana :)
sunforged, as others have said, this is very helpful Hub. What I find good about this kind of Hub is that it turns "Google-speak" into "regular-speak". I just find it hard to keep "paying attention" when I try to read about a lot of this kind of stuff on sites like Google's own.
Wow Susana, you have opened up a whole new world for me. I have used Google a million times (literally) and nvever knew this was there. I am already taking stock of what long tail phrases I can use in my articles.
Thanks for the wisdom sharing, I will bookmark this site.
Your work is sooooo inspiring and enjoyable. I'll really enjoy reading your articles.
Great Hub! Thanks for being so kind to share this with all of us. You have a nice writing style!! Excellent information!
Very useful information about the Wonder Wheel tool. Long tail keywords can be very profitable. However, keep in mind that "long tail" does not mean "long phrase". Rather, it refers to less frequently searched terms which, when you have a lot of them, add up to a great deal of traffic. These often are longer, more specific phrases, though, so the info you give is still very useful.
great article. i am going to check out the wonderwheel now.
Excellent article. Well written, easy to understand and well researched. 10/10.
PS Oh and very helpful as well.
nice job...going to do it right now...

Great job. Thank you!
Rated and Big Up!
Excellent Hub; great information. I wasn't aware of this Google feature, it will help greatly with my keyword research.
Thanks for the great information. I am already familiar with this too. But today when I tried to use it, I am shocked to notice that there is no such option under the "standard View" section. I tried in different browsers but was of no use. The only option I could see is "Timeline". Pls reply soon.
Great, usable info, thanks.
Wonderful!! I didn't know about this so thank you.
Outstanding Hub. I have much to learn. I am in the early stages of building a platform for my new book, "Eyes Wide Shut" An Enigma." The Internet is a dynamic whirlwind... Keep the information coming... Thanks.
This is much appreciated - THANK YOU!
Learned a lot from your article. Well explained.
Thank you for this very helpful information.
Very helpful indeed. I don't pay too much attention to keywords when I am writing. I just type what comes to mind. Now I know the trick and perhaps I could earn more online. He he . thanks.
Hi!
Very Good updated information!
So with the latest update Google now has the power to rank 5 letters or more long words with exact the match. Isn't it?
Before the update Google could analyze only for 3 or 4 words and the rest Google rate them by related words. Am I right?
-- Thanks
Excellent hub! I felt as if I've been doing pretty well with keywords, but this will help me find even better ones. I'm enjoying your whole series on writing hubs.

Very helpful! I love the wonder wheel. It's what we use now to determine what related content we should be incorporating into our sites.
Hey this has been really helpful!
There is sooo much I still don't know! But I'm gonna read all your helpful hubs :)
I read each and every word carefully. I made "favorites" for key websites. Great treasure trove. As a "newbie," I have much to learn. You certainly are appreciated with your "been there and done that experience...
Good hub
'Long tail' is becoming increasingly important as the internet gets filled with **** and search engines can only do so much! =)
Really good hub with a very good explanation. I did not know that google had this tool to find long tail keywords. The explanation is very thorough. Thanks
Great find and great article. When you are trying to pick a term or phrase to use, is there a golden number (of results) you look for? Like what number do you shoot for? 5,000 results, 10,000 results? Obviously, you don't want something with a million results.....
I have never heard of long tail keywords or the Google wonder wheel. I am so glad I found you! Pam
Thanks so much! I've been writing online for a year or so and nobody has talked about the Wonder Wheel! I feel like this is going to be really useful.
This is great hub! I enjoyed it from the start to the end. You've answered all my questions regarding long tail keywords. Thanks!!
This is a great piece - it's so key to pick out the right long tails!

I did the Wonder Wheel for one Hub and tested it out - it's in the 70's, but over time it will grow as long as my content is original and my keywords are relevant.

this is really helpful since i just started a while ago :) thanks a lot!
Extremely helpful and well thought out.
This is by far the BEST explanation of long tail titles I have ever read and the Google Wonder Wheel might be the best-kept secret? Tonight, I tweek some titles and will watch what happens. Bookmarked, voted up, useful, awesome and stumbled!
Hello!
I was referred to your hub by livewithrichard in a forum post. This is a lot of information, so I've bookmarked it for future reference.
As far as Amazon Affiliates program goes, Pfffftt!! As a California resident, I've just been unceremoniously dumped from that!
Google, on the other hand, I struggle with continually. The more I read, the more it seems targeted to articles/websites actively engaged in selling or pushing a particular product or service.
I have zero interest in that aspect--I don't want to try and sell anyone anything. I only want to write, and hopefully write interesting/informative/educational articles that folks want to read--and--hope that Google places appropriate ads that might inspire a related click-through.
I have no illusions about making thousands..but it would be nice to at least reach the payout threshhold each month! That would be a helpful extra bit of cash..
Bookmarked, voted up, useful and interesting. Thanks for sharing this info.
Long tail keywords are really very important in SEO ..Thanks for the great post..
Well, darn! I discovered Google's wonder wheel after it's gone? LOL Great hub! Thumbs up!
Excellent information! Finding long tail keyword phrases that you can actually rank for makes all the difference. You cannot simply write article after article and hope to get a winner, you need to know what phrases have low competition and lots of searches per month.
Hi Susana S.,
Another great article. Thanks so much.
Best,
Journey *
Unfortunately the wonder wheel is no longer available on Google but this is still an excellent article that would have been very useful if the tool was still there.
Any alternative to wonder wheel, I wonder why Google discontinued it. I tried related searches but its not giving any relevant suggestions, anyhow a great hub but unfortunately Timed Out.
Thanks, that's helpful, Susana. Love your hubs. Voted up and useful! :) ECAL
Great hub Susana,
Long tail keywords are the way to go.
Voted up useful and awesome.
