Compare 3D TV's - Mitsubishi DLP vs Samsung LED and Plasma

By

Mitsubishi vs Samsung 3D Ready HDTV

Two manufactuers who managed to get their 3D Ready TV's on the market early are long time TV makers, Mitsubishi and Samsung. Surprisingly, both companies have been producing 3D Ready TV's for the last 3 years in DLP (Digital Light Processing) format and so they have had plenty of time to perfect their 3D TV technology.

Mitsubishi have continued to use and perfect DLP technology, created by Texas Instruments, for their new wave of 3D Ready TV's, while Samsung have moved on from DLP and have released some beautiful Plasma, LCD and LED 3D TV's this year.

Mitsubishi or Samsung 3D TV?

So now we have a choice about which 3D TV system to use, but which Samsung or Mitsubishi is best? Each of the MItsubishi and Samsung 3D HDTV's have absolutely excellent picture quality and use the latest 1080p resolution and 120 or 240 hz refresh rates, in order to achieve crisp lines, beautiful color depth and vividness, blur free movement and top quality 3D rendering, so there's not much to choose between them on that score. The main areas of difference are around ease of system set up, what you actually want your 3D TV to do (gaming, watch 3D TV broadcasts or 3D movies - maybe all three), and price.

Let's take a look at each of the Samsung and Mitsubishi 3D TV's available and compare their functionality, features and prices.

If your main consideration is price, then without doubt the cheapest 3D Ready TV you can buy will is one of the Mitsubishi DLP 3D Ready TV's. You can buy one of these at an amazingly low price of under $1,000. That's a simply incredible price for the chance to enjoy a completely immersive 3D entertainment experience.

Extra Large Screen Sizes

These DLP 3D Ready TV's from Mitsubishi are also the largest of the bunch, so if size matters to you and you want the biggest viewing screen that you can get then Mitsubishi can provide you with screen sizes of up to 82 inches. In comparison to Samsung's 3D TV's which only go up to 58 inches, Mitsubishi can provide a very large screen at a lower price.

Best For 3D PC Gaming

Early on in the history of 3D home entertainment, Mitsubishi 3D Ready TV's were developed in conjunction with nVidia, the market leaders in top quality PC graphics cards for hardcore gamers, which makes Mitsubishi 3D TV's ahead of Samsung on this aspect of 3D entertainment.

To enjoy gaming in 3D on your PC in conjunction with your Mitsubishi 3D TV, then you will need to have a pretty high spec PC and to purchase nVidia's 3D Vision Kit which includes 3D rendering software so that you can convert hundreds of games and movies into 3D, as well as an infrared emitter and active shutter 3D glasses.

With the advent of the Mitsubishi 3D adpater it's easy to enjoy to 3D TV broadcasts and 3D Blu Ray, because the adapter converts any 3D format into checkboard (which is what Mitsubishi 3D TV's use).

The Mitsubishi 3D Ready DLP TV's certainly have their positives as well as a few negatives, it all depends on what you primarily want to use your 3D TV for and how much you want to pay for your 3D TV. For those of you that prefer the LED or Plasma TV format over DLP, Samsung will be the natural choice of 3D TV manaufacturer. You will pay a little more for the priviledge as the lowest cost Samsung 3D HDTV is currently priced at just under $1,800, but this is still incredibly cheap for such smart technology. With Samsung's 3D TV's you also get internet connectivity which means that as well as being able to use the net on your TV, you'll also be able to download firmware upgrades for it as well. This is one of the top advantages Samsung 3D TV's have over Mitsubishi's.

A Complete 3D Package

In many ways Samsung have beaten Mitsubishi in the 3D technology race by creating a complete 3D TV package, that's easy to set up and is perfect for watching 3D Blu Ray movies and your favorite 3D TV channels. Samsung have recently released their 3D starter kit which includes 2 pairs of active shutter glasses and in addition to this they have produced their own 3D Blu Ray player. Gaming in 3D with Samsung

Samsung do have a software system very similar to the nVidia 3D Vision Kit that runs with the Mitsubishi 3D TV's, made by Tri-Def. Unfortunately, the Tri-Def system is only compatible with Samsung's older 3D DLP TV's, so is now pretty obsolete. Maybe as time goes on we'll see a firmware update from Samsung that will allow gaming in 3D on your Samsung 3D TV, but at the moment Samsung is not the best option for a 3D gaming/TV combination. If gaming is your passion then choosing a Mitsubishi 3D TV will definitely be the better option.

Samsung make 3D entertainment at home simple, which is what most of us want - simple systems that work together properly and connect easily. To read more about Samsung's 3D TV's read the full Samsung 3D TV Review.

I need to buy a new tv after researching all the choices, this hub is making it easier. I'm a thinker I have to sleep on things and consider all the options. I appreciate this helpful hub on tvs. Thanks and Peace :)

Hi Hello, hello - you're welcome. While the prices of 3D Ready TV's is already low, I imagine they will come down further over the next few years. Hopefully by then you will have more income to spare to buy a new TV :)

Hi Katie - glad my review helped you :)

JenDobson27 2 years ago

Thanks for sharing. I just went to Best Buy to check out the 3-D TVs and I must say they are pretty cool! Still too expensive, but maybe in a year or two they will come down in price.

ladyjane1 2 years ago

I want one so bad. Great hub.

Susana S 2 years ago

Hi Jen - Yes 3D TV is totally cool! I imagine that they will come down in price as more people buy them.

Hi Ladyjane - thanks :)

Cheeky Girl 2 years ago

These are great TVs and will some day be the standard equipment in all homes. Great hub.

Susana S 2 years ago

Thanks Cheeky :) I agree. Some are poo pooing 3D at home and saying that it will never take off, but I don't think the TV manufacturers are going to have any of that since they are pouring so much money into their 3D technology. In a few years we'll all be watching 3D TV.

save my system 2 years ago

This is major concern in TV manufacturing industry. 3 D TV gives great experience of watching TV. However, It's compatibility must check. After some hours it surely one major part of house.

BigLar 2 years ago

I have 67" Sammy DLP LED 3d. Will the new 3d conversion box that Mitsubishi is coming out with allow 3d video and gaming without a computer setup? Any info on this new box and it's uses with the DLP's would be great.

Thanks for your great site and the info you provide. Larry

Susana S 2 years ago

Hi BigLar - I'm getting a lot of questions like this about the Mitsubishi converter box and at the moment there is not a great deal of clear info about what it will and won't do. I'm going to do the research and write an article all about it. So I'm sorry I can't answer your question immediately, but be assured that I am on the case!

Hi

Similar questions to the others

I want to connect my Xbox 360 on 3D and a Sony 3D Blu-Ray.

I dont want to use any PC for this.

Mitsu DLP or Samsung LED.

thanx

Susana S 21 months ago

What 3D glasses are you going for? Do you already have the sony 3d blu ray player?

Samsung would be the best 3D TV as Mits DLP's are not compatible with the sony blu ray player, but it does depend on which 3D glasses you have as Samsung 3D TV's require samsung 3D glasses.

If you haven't bought your set up yet, I'd definitely go for a samsung bundle of 3D LED TV, 3D blu ray player and starter kit (includes 2 x glasses). That way you know for sure that there will not be any compatibility issuesand you'll have a wicked set up.

Steve 19 months ago

People spend Millions of dollars to have eye surgery so they don't have to wear glasses i doubt 3D is going to take off considering now you have to wear "ugly" glasses to see it just my opinion its more or less just cool to say you have "the latest" but really how often are you going to sit in your living room with a pair of funny looking glasses on???

Susana S 19 months ago

3D has already taken off - you'd be surprised at the amount of people buying 3D TV's right now. At the moment 3D is very popular with gamers because it really enhances the gaming experience. It's also popular with those that love 3D movies. Whether it will become mainstream, who knows. I'm pretty sure as the prices come down and more 3d blu rays are available more people will get into 3D at home.

tony 18 months ago

I just recently purchased the mitsubishi 3d starter kit for my 60in mitsubishi 3d TV. What would be the more compatible 3d blu ray DVD player for the set up?

Susana S 18 months ago

Hi Tony - I would suggest one of the panasonic 3D blu ray players to go with your Mits, because you can plug these directly into the TV, saving your HDMI in port on the adapter for another peripheral such as your sat box.

leemun 18 months ago

hi,in a previous post you said sony bluray isn't compatible with Mit, but shop nbc is offering a sony player and glasses with there dlp 3d ready?

Susana S 18 months ago

I think a Sony 3D Blu ray player will work if you also have the Mitsubishi adapter (starter kit), but it won't be able to do 3D if plugged directly into the TV. That was the info I got direct from Sony, but it was some time ago now.

Renee B 18 months ago

I have been told that for 3D televisions, you should have at least a 240 HZ television. Is a 600 Hz worse or better than 240?

Susana S 18 months ago

Hi Renee - they are different. You'll see the DLP, LED & LCD 3D TV's with 120hz, 240hz or 480hz. The plasma's are different because they produce images differently. All the plasma 3D TV's have a 600hz sub field drive.

Also be aware that just because a TV has one of these Hz measurements it doesn't mean it's necessarily 3D. If you're looking to buy a 3D TV make sure it specifically says that it is 3D or 3D ready.

Marcos 16 months ago

The New Mits 3dtvs have had a firmware upgrade that allows you to use all the 3d standards. Side By Side, Top bottom, and checkerboard. You don't have to get the adapter for the 2010 models (738 and 838 series).

brad 15 months ago

just one question hope you can help im looking at getting the Mitsubishi dlp 82" 82838 model tv. is the 3d the same as samsung tvs? is the image better worse? its a big investment to buy a tv like this and it not do what i need it to do i play online gaming on my xbox 360 s and watch movies and play games on my ps3. i also use my Yamaha surround sound system. also i heard the 120 hz is devided the left image is 60 frames per second and the right is 60 fps when watching fast past movies or hard core gaming can you see a lag? any help you give would be nice.

Susana S 15 months ago

Hi Brad - I much prefer Mitsubishi's 3D DLP TV's over Samsung's. The image quality the DLP produces is excellent (far superior to plasma, Led or LCD) and you also benefit from the huge screen size. I'd say go for it! Just make sure you get the latest model available.

Brad 15 months ago

Thanks Susana - do you know what is the latest model Mitsubishi has right now? or should i hold off a few months to see if something new comes out? thanks again for the reply.

Jamo 14 months ago

I originally owned a 72" DLP and traded up to the Samsung 55" 3D LED. The picture clarity is mind-blowing - so vivid in fact that film (I'm also a classic buff) looks like video which is not necessarily a good thing in this case. My issue now is that I've traded size for clarity and miss the large screen experience. I want to buy the 82" Mitsubishi 3D and my tax refund is burning a whole in both my pocket and my head. Hope I am not making a mistake (or going backwards) but I'm about to take the plunge... Wish me luck!
