The subject of how to avoid pregnancy has many myths, old wives tales and falsehoods attached to it, so in this article my aim is to dispell those myths and sort out fact from fiction.
After all, if you don't want to get pregnant and spend the next 18 years caring for someone else, then why take needless risks or listen to age old stories from back when people didn't really understand how pregnancy happened?
Being pregnant and either having a baby or a termination, is life changing in a VERY BIG WAY. If your not ready for that kind of change yet, then learning how to avoid pregnancy is a good lesson to learn.
Myths and Old Wives Tales
Withdrawal - this is when the man removes his penis from the vagina before he ejaculates (or comes). It's probably true that you are somewhat less likely to become pregnant if you do this but there is still a high likelihood of pregnancy.
It is not a reliable method of contraception or birth control because sperm is released before ejaculation. As one reader points out it's the strongest sperm that are released before ejaculation - the ones with most chance of reaching the ovum.
It only takes one sperm to reach the egg, so why risk it? This technique is fine if you and your partner are in a long term, stable relationship and neither of you mind becoming parents at the moment. But if you really do not want it baby it's no protection at all. Many, many women have fallen pregnant this way.
You Cannot Get Pregnant the First Time
This is another complete myth! Once you start your periods your body is able to become pregnant even if it is your first time having sex. I know one woman personally, who did become pregnant on her first time and became a single mother at 16. You could call it bad luck, but luck is not something you want to dice with when it comes to pregnancy. The consequences are too big to just trust the roll of the dice.
Douching
Douching is when you attempt to wash the sperm out of your vagina after sex. This doesn't work and can damage you. The way that our bodies work are that the man ejaculates right at the entrance of the cervix (the entrance to your womb) and the strongest sperm can get beyond the cervix and start swimming happily to your egg within two minutes. There are on average around 3 million sperm released with each ejaculation, so a great many of them will be in your womb long before you can wash them out.
Douching can also increase the liklihood of conception because it actually pushes more sperm into your cervix.
Avoiding Ovulation
This is all about avoiding the time that your body releases eggs from your ovaries, which normally happens in the middle of your cycle. So if you have a 28 day menstrual cycle - day 1 being the first day of your period, then you can expect to ovulate at around day 14.
The problem with this method is that our bodies are very, very clever. They are geared up to make babies and will do whatever it takes to make sure that we continue the species. It is their biological function and they take their jobs very seriously.
- If you regularly have sex just after your period your body will release the egg (ovum) early so that it can catch the sperm and fertilize.
- The same goes for if you try to beat nature by having unprotected sex just after you think you have ovulated. The egg will wait to be released.

Sperm can live for up to 7 days. So if you have a 5 day period, then have sex on day 6 - on day 13 (just as you a likely to be ovulating) and by which time Mr Spermy will be right in your fallopian tube waiting - the sperm will still be alive and be eagerly trying to find your egg.
Sex During Your Period
You can get pregnant from having unprotected sex during your period for all the reasons above. You never know when your ovum will be released, you don't know if there are sperm still alive inside you and your body is doing it's utmost to get pregnant.
Jumping Up and Down After Sex
This may sound silly but I have heard people say that this is what they do to try and avoid getting pregnant! Sperm can swim against the force of gravity pretty easily, so jumping up and down is not going to make the slightest bit of difference. Once those sperm are inside your uterus (remember they can get there in less than a couple of minutes) they will be hunting out your egg like little undercover agents and a bit of jumping up and down is not going to stop them.
How to Really Avoid Pregnancy
No Sex Full Stop
This is an option that many young women are taking nowadays and is a wise and admirable option, but it's not for everyone. Young people are especially keen to find out about their sexuality and it's a normal and natural impulse to want to explore this new world of desire and passion and to find out what our grown up bodies can do. It's got to be said though that no sex = no pregnancy and it is the most surefire way of not becoming pregnant.
No Penetrative Sex
If you want to explore your sexuality with your partner, then one way is to make sure you do not have penetrative sex. There are many other ways that you can please each other such as hand stimulation and oral sex that can be just as satifying and pleasurable. You just need to be especially careful that sperm does not go anywhere near the vagina. If you get sperm on your hands do not then touch or allow your partner to touch your vagina. The risk of pregnancy would be slim but it is still there. Remember that it only takes one sperm to make a baby.
Contraception
My own reccomendation for anyone who wants to have sex and does not want to get pregnant would be to see a health professional about getting yourself some reliable contraception. But do remember that no birth control method comes with a 100% no pregnancy guarantee. Every method is subject to failure, especially when they are not used properly.
If you are taking the pill you must take it every single day. If you forget just one you will not be protected for that whole month. You will need to use an alternative method for the rest of that month. If you are on antibiotics your pill may not work and so again, you will need to use another form of contraception on top of that, such as condoms. Don't listen to boys who tell you they don't like condoms - ask them if they would like to be a daddy instead. From my own experience men who say they don't like condoms and would rather take a risk are not worth having. They obviously have no respect for you and no thought to the consequences of what they're doing.
Avoid Alcohol and Drugs
This last one is really important, especially for young people. That's because most teenagers who become pregnant have had unprotected sex when they have drunk too much or have been using drugs. Both drastically inhibit your ability to think properly and make wise decisions. Having unprotected sex may seem ok when you are out of it and caught up in the moment, but I can guarantee you it will not feel ok the next morning nor in the coming weeks when you are waiting anxiously for your next period.

If You Do Make a Mistake
If you do make an error of judgement and have unprotected sex, then get yourself the morning after pill (or Plan B as it's known in the US) as soon as you can afterwards. It's most effective when taken within 24 hours of unprotected sex. It can be taken later, but the longer you leave it the less effective it is at preventing pregnancy and if the fertilized egg has already implanted it will not be effective at all.

Hmmm...if your body were to release an ovum earlier because you have sex right after your period, wouldn't your cycle become progressively shorter? How would your menstrual cycle know the difference between unprotected sex and protected sex so that an egg is not released? I thought it was estrogen and progesterone that managed that...I'm also not sure on the old wives tales, humans have known for centuries how to stop pregnancy.
Hi Whiteiris - It's to do with the interaction of both the male and female's body chemistry (so a barrier method of contraception will prevent this form taking place).
One of the main hormones that tells a womans body to release the ovum is prostaglandin which amazingly, semen also contains in very high concentrations. In effect, the semen can tell the ovum to be relseased into the fallopian tube by chemical communication. The ovum also releases chemicals to attract the sperm so that it knows where to go. There are many more of these kinds of chemical interactions taking place to increase the liklihood of fertilization. There's a lot more to it than what we learn in high school biology classes. I'd recommend reading Human Reproductive Biology By Richard Evan Jones, Kristin H. López for an in depth look at how it works.
I would disagree that humans have know for centuries how to stop pregnancy - they may have known some methods of reducing the likelihood of pregnancy, but not prevent it altogether and that's the point really. None of the old wives tales are particularly effective - just ask any teenage mum who has had an unplanned pregnancy.
I have heard about all those myths you mentioned. Your tips for not getting pregnant makes sense. For me I prefer birth control pills than depending on my guy for protection.

What worries me is when I read questions from young women saying that they took a birth control pill after they had sex and they are hoping this will protect them when we us older woomen know it won't. My doctor once told me that the only trusted way for not getting pregnant is...'No intercourse.' All other methods work only till they want to. I know that might sound far from truth but Nature has it's own ways of playing tricks on us. Perhaps the reason is , as you mentioned, a woman's body is biological designed to give birth to a new life and it does not leave any opportunity to do so. This was certainly a very interesting read. :)
I'm very surprised at the life span of sperm. Their sneaky little bastards, hahaha. I think the best way to not get pregnant besides not having intercourse, is to double up with condoms and the pill/shot.

The only sure way to avoid it is to not do it.
Just some info that I learned is that the actual sperm that is the strongest will come out before a man even ejaculates. I learned that from my OB after I told them I wasn't going to use birth control pills after I had my second baby. Withdrawl is certainly not the way to go.

I agree that the only way to completely avoid pregnancy is to refrain from sex completely. In reality many young adults do not choose that option. For those that do choose to have sex they need to understand the unneccessary risks they are taking and have the very inaccurate information that is banded about challenged.
I write a lot on yahoo answers and some of the things that young people think will stop them becoming pregnant are incredibly naive - it's scary how uninformed they are.

Hi Akshara - the i pill (morning after or plan B) is not something to be taken often because it contains massive amounts of hormones. (It's not reccommended to be taken more than once in 6 months maximum.)It shouldn't be used like a contraceptive - it really is for the very odd mistake. Do think about seeing a doctor for some reliable contraception and carrying some condoms with you. If you take care of your sexual health you will not need to feel scared - you can take control of it :)

Susana S: Excellent hub, thank-you for publishing this! Notice that it's mostly guys who are rooting for abstinence? Strange. I've found the most fool-proof method of birth control to be using more than one form of birth control at a time... (Think about it, two birth control forms that are both 99% effective means you've something like a 1 out of a million chance of getting pregnant if they're used properly.) I prefer using condoms and spermicidal jelly (or films, which are less messy.) I wanted to mention to the couple of young ladies who are interested in beginning the shot to read up on it online. Some women have had incredibly adverse reactions to the shot, some have even committed suicide after using it. If there's a three month shot option, I'd recommend opting for that, rather than the standard six month option. Just until you find out how it works for you. Nicole - yeh it's weird that it's men talking about abstinence here. I haven't yet met one that wanted to abstain, but maybe that's just in my life, lol. Two methods of birth control is certainly a good way to proceed. Just not two condoms at once! The friction causes them to split.
Skotikala - this hub is not just written for religious people. Many people want the freedom to make love and also be able to decide when they want a family.
I enjoyed your hub, but I see no mention of a man partner getting fixed to prevent pregnancy and avoid any form from any out of relationship sex. I used birth control most my life until hormonal break down, then went abstinence until I found my life partner.Even then I gave my new partner high warning, which happen the condom broke. Yes quickly after my child was born I stated for hubby to get fixed or no sex at all. Yet I still preferred before marriage the men to where condoms anyway to prevent STD's The medical profession still have a long way to go to understand hormones and birth control pills change a female personality more than public are willing to accept to to avoid sex at all.

I certainly agree with what you say about conraceptive pills. I have never been able to take them because of the effects on me hormonally. But most people I know have taken them successfully. Condoms do have the added bonus of protecting from STD's - they're a method of birth control that I'm very happy to use and I have done for many years. Never had a splitting experience though I know that can happen.

what Do You Think About the Nuvaring? I'm kind of scared to use most birthcontroll methods because of all the side affects that can lead to strokes its crazy I guess the best for me is a condom and then you think its crazy to use a condom uf you been with this person for a long time and isn't use to using anything
Hi sbrown - had never heard of nuvaring so i just looked it up. Looks interesting! I have no idea whether it's good, bad or whatever. I don't think condoms are crazy in a long term relationhsip if that's what suits you both. Ther best thing about them is that you don't need to use any hormone based birth control.

Anjana - I'm sorry you are in such turmoil right now. From what I've understood your period is 10 days late? My advice would be to do a pregnancy test and find out for certain. If it comes back positive and you are pregnant there isn't much you can do if you really do not want the baby except for another abortion. There's no reliable or safe methods you can use at home, unless the doctor prescribed you the abortion pill. If you are in a stable relationship would you not consider keeping the baby? They don't always turn up when we plan them, but they are a joy nonetheless.
You may not even be pregnant, there could be some other reason your period is delayed. Do the test! If it's negative and your period still doesn't come then speak to your doctor.

Pooja - Unfortunately the only thing I can suggest is to refrain from penetrative sex. If you live in a country where abortion is not allowed, then I'm guessing that your country will also not support an unmarried mother. In that case it really is not worth taking the risk unless you are fully ready for the consequences such as being cast out by your family, being shamed by your whole community and trying to bring up a baby on your own or risking an illegal and dangerous abortion.
I think girl has more responsibility with them to avoid pregnancy. Boy can best help out with no sex because sometimes condoms do fail. It is true that other mentioned things like washing, jumping, etc. are just rumours. A single drop of sperm contains millions of cells to make a girl pregnant, so you can't just fight with it,avoiding penetrating sex is best option lies out. After all sex has made for reproduction naturally, so couple needs to findout other ways to please their partners. Thanks
I have seven children and have been pregnant 9 times and still learned something from your hub. Actually, I was surprised to learn that the pre ejaculated sperm are the strongest. I've used the withdrawal method successfully several times with no problem. Most of my pregnancies were planned between my childrens father and I by just calculating my cycle which is fairly normal unless I'm stressed out. In which case my cycle would be unpredictable. I wanted to add another pregnancy myth though. Some women believe if they are exclusively breast feeding that they will not get pregnant. That is also not true. I know that one for a fact..I found out with my second or third child. Also, my cousin is a doctor..actually a trauma surgeon now, but he told me that some sperm can live up to two weeks. I was blown away when I heard that. I always counted 72 hours and thought I was good to go, but like I said, most of my children were planned, if not by me (there was a time when I didn't know the science behind all of this), by my children's father. SuperInteriors - sorry for the very late response to your question! I have used an IUD successfully before, though I don't have one now. In fact I would recommend it as a contraceptive method for any woman who has had children - once it's been inserted it's hassle free. I also had lighter and shorter periods which was nice! Just 2 or 3 days of light bleeding. The only problem I had with it was having it removed. The string went up into my cervix and I had to see a consultant - luckily he got it out without any surgery!

Please tell me if your parents had thought as you think of the subject of avoiding pregnancy, you will not be in life now. We must not be so selfish. The children are the most beautiful human beings and the most sincere friends in this life. To me the problem is to feel oneself as god. The best is pure marrying life and to become responsible fathers and mothers. We can turn our life to the happy worship with a happy family and children.

I agree that children are a blessing, but I also think that it's ok to choose when it's right to have a baby and to be informed about the process of conception. There are many pregnancies that occur because people think they can somehow cheat nature - which they can't, and because they don't understand how easy it is to conceive!
Often these pregnancies occur outside of a stable relationship, are unwanted, and end in either termination or single parenthood. I don't judge any of these scenarios, but young people especially, can avoid having to make such life changing decisions before they are ready for them, by being informed and not taking stupid risks (like thinking that jumping up and down afterwards will prevent pregnancy!).
Many cultures are now beyond the belief that it's a sin to use contraception - and I'm firmly in that camp!
My own parents had a very hard time when I was conceived as they were not married and the villagers where my Dad comes from were very judgemental. They suffered a great deal at that time. I'm glad I'm here, but I'm also glad that they didn't constantly have more and more children. They could barely afford to raise two children and that has to be a consideration too. What's the point of having a very large family that you can't feed?

I see a common problem not only in you, but also in many people of modern world today that these people consider themselves as gods. These gods have got the right of living in luxury, but only they, this right does not occur for anyone except them. According to them these so-called gods are giving nourishment to their babies and are giving life to them... This is very big nonsense. The Almigty God gives nourishment and life to all of the creatures. For instance you are saying "I'm glad I'm here, but I'm also glad that they didn't constantly have more and more children". To me this statement is a very big instance of selfishness. You have right of living here, but your piteous brother/sister has not this right. I consider that this is a very big unjust share. How can I think like this? Who am I? Please don't be agry with me, but we must change a lot of standards/paradigmas in our lifes. We aren't gods, we are only criters of the Same Creator. Who feeding us is only He. And He will also feed our children. I do not want to seem as firm fatalistic, of course I am aware of the difficulties of owning baby, but we must try to establish stable relationships. I'm not at all angry with you. I just think we have very different view points and that's ok - I enjoy the debate! I don't see myself as a God, though I do think that a large section of mankind can be very arrogant in terms of feeling themselves above nature (e.g. in relation to the whole climate change debate) - so on this I think we might agree?
I don't see it as selfish to have as many children as one can afford - I see it as realistic and sensible. Isn't it better to have four children that you can feed and clothe sufficiently than have 13 children that are all hungry and in the direst of poverty? To me it makes sense to give a lesser number of children a good quality of life.
Another problem with having no control over the amount of children you have is that it leaves women constrained to a life of motherhood with no opportunity to develop their other very valuable skills that could be of use to the world. This I see as a very backward step and detrimental to the human race. Though motherhood is very important and valuable many women have a lot more to give and quite rightly want the opportunity to do so.
The last thing I think it's important to note is that humans have always manipulated nature for their own benefit. From cutting down a tree to make fire or a shelter, cultivating crops and making metal to making medicine, inventing the car and space exploration. All of these things involve the manipulation of the fundamental building blocks of nature. Who is to judge any of these as wrong or sinful? I imagine that you benefit from many of these manipulations since you are using the internet and are not living like a caveman? Some things I would agree should never have been created such as the atom bomb, but i wouldn't put contraception in the same category. It's simply another example of mankind manipulating nature for his own benefit and it harms no one.

A very informative article. I will be getting married in May and abstinence won't work for us (Hee hee!)However, I am looking into the best form of protection. I'm sure He won't care for the condoms,so I'll have to look into either the pill or the shot. I have heard women tend to gain excessive weight with the shot. Is this true and is there a high percentage of women that are affected this way?

Any hormone based contracptive can cause you to put on weight. I guess at least with the pill there are so many different types that you should be able to find one that does not have this side effect for you.

Many advocates of non pregnancy will urge to educate yourselves on mutual stimulation from oral to safe anal practice.

Hi Sid, The best ways to prevent or avoid pregnancy are to not to have penetrative sex or use a reliable contraceptive. There is no sexual position that will avoid pregnancy if you are unprotected. To know if you are fertile you would need to have your sperm tested in a labratory. Hope that helps :)

Hi, I just wanted to say I love your articles, they have helped me out a lot. One main question I have is, do you have to wait until your missed period to take a test? And also, this makes me sound terrible I'm really never this foolish, but I had intercourse with 2 different ppl..one on a thursday night...then one on the friday night..took the morning after pill friday and then went and took it again on saturday morning. Hi gnedjs - no there's no way of knowing if you are pregnant at the moment. It can take days after intercourse for the egg to become implanted anyway, so you might not be pregnant now but you could be a few days. Hi Ewan - there's nothing she can do right now, except hope that her period arrives. The only way a pregnancy *vanishes* is through termination or miscarriage. If she is lucky enough to escape pregnancy this time, she's going to need to be a lot more careful in the future. You can't cheat nature and it's not worth taking risks with.

Hi Haritha, you need to get the morning after pill (also called Plan B) as soon as you can. It's most effective if taken within 24 hours hours of unprotected sex, but can be taken up to 72 hours after. No there isn't anything else Rick. The chances are very good that your partner won't be pregnant. 1. you did not ejaculate inside her. 2. she took the i-pill. Hi nahuri - first I'm not a doctor :) I used to work with teens, women and families with young children before I was a writer and so became very familiar with the issues around conception, pregnancy and contraception.
The question to ask yourself is do you know exactly when the safe period is? Do you take your temperature or test your urine everyday so that you know precisely when you have ovulated? Do you do this month after month so that you can be sure since ovulation doesn't always happen on a predictable day? Once ovulation has occured how many days afterwards is the egg available to be fertilized?
The answer is to use a proper form of contraception or find other ways to plesaure each other. Condoms are freely available if you don't want to go to the doctors. Plan B is not a contraceptive - it should be used a maximum of one time in 6 months. It is not good for you to take anymore frequently than that.

Hi Jimmy, What a pickle! Unfortunately it sounds like you've had unprotected sex just at the wrong time (when your girlfriend is most likely to be fertile). Do you know when her period was due? If you're lucky she may just be late but she'll need to take a pregnancy test and do it correctly to find out for sure.
If she is pregnant, you've both got some thinking (and talking) to do about what you want such as whether you want to have a baby and whether you want to both tell your parents about your relationship. I hope it works out ok for the both of you. Best wishes, x

Hi Patty, what some couples like to do to be extra careful is double up on contraception - no not two condoms (!), but you could consider using another form of contraception alongside condoms to help put your mind at rest.
There are many options such as using a spermicide, (which would kill any sperm that did escape),a cap, contraceptive sponge or hormone based contraceptives such as the pill, injection or implant.
No one contraceptive is 100% fail safe but using two at once will reduce your chances of pregnancy to a miniscule %. Best wiahes x

Hi Laura - No, it doesn't work like that. If your ovum was fertilized the hormones in plan B prevent implantation in the womb. If the egg has already implanted Plan B has no effect, so taking it twice doesn't make any difference (plus it's really not good for you).

I find your description of the birth control system which involves avoiding sex around the time of ovulation to be lacking. This system works because the woman observes a variety of fertile symptoms which a normally-functioning, healthy body produces regularly every month. These symptoms include observing vaginal mucus, which changes in quality throughout the month; charting the basal body temperature, which has a very definitely pattern it follows during the month; and, least of all, observing the cervical position, dilation, and texture, all of which change in accordance with the approach and passing of ovulation. The practice of natural birth control takes commitment (on the part of both partners) and perseverance.
And, for the record, I know of no woman whose ovulation has moved due to her having sex exclusively before or after ovulation. If that were the case, then the women who were trying to avoid pregnancy would have increasingly long cycles and delayed ovulation. This simply isn't the case.

If you need a secular source, check out Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler, but you can also take courses from the Couple to Couple League (their text is The Art of Natural Family Planning) or Billings (called the Billings Ovulation Method) or Creighton (called the Creighton Model, researched meticulously for decades at Creighton University) or Marquette (currently still being studied but also reliable; begun at Marquette University).
You're spreading misinformation about women's cycles and how ovulation works. We aren't like rabbits or alpacas, whose ovulation is induced by sex. In a woman, the beginning of the cycle is when estrogen dominates. Ovulation occurs (it could be early or late, depending on lots of factors like whether she has polycystic ovarian syndrome or endometriosis or is under stress), and then progesterone takes over. The corpeus luteum (the follicle that surrounded the maturing ovum) produces progesterone until a pregnancy occurs (when the placenta takes over) or doesn't (which is what causes menstruation). There are reliable signs and cross-checks that can be used to identify ovulation. The most commonly used methods are symptothermal (advocated in TCOYF, mentioned above), which include observing cervical mucus and taking the basal body temperature each morning. Some women also check their cervical positions as an additional sign. Other methods rely on biophysical markers, mainly cervical mucus, while one (Marquette) uses a fertility monitor.

I don't need a biology 101 lesson - I understand the biological processes you describe, but there is a great deal of *new* ground breaking science discovering exactly what is happening in reproduction including the aspects that I wrote about, so I'm afraid it won't be coming off.
I don't know many (or any) teenagers that are taking their basal temperature everyday, checking their mucous or their cervical position and even if they were it would not be as protective (either for pregnancy or STD's) as abstaining, pleasing each other in different ways or using condoms. The reliability of the methods you describe are poor in comparison.
I just checked out TCOYF which has a failure rate of 12-25% - that's fine for long term couples who would like children and don't mind falling pregnant but it's no good not for anyone who really wants to avoid pregnancy.

6 months ago, after pregnancy test and check up we found that my wife was 4weeks pregnant and at that time we din't want baby. If you had unprotected sex less than 72 hours ago, you can get the morning after pill (also called plan B or i-pill) from a pharmacy, doctor or it's possible to buy online. It needs to be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex, but after 72 hours it will not have any effect.
If you are already pregnant then you'll need to see a doctor.
If you want contraception, again you'll need to see a doctor unless you go for condoms. Best wishes :)

Hi Lucy, that is a terrible situation with your husband forcing himself on you. Try and think if there is anyone you can tell or anything you can do to stop this from happening e.g. sleep in a different room; tell a relative that you trust; go stay with someone else such as your parents. Your husband forcing himself on you is not acceptable - get as much support as you can.
For the pregnancy part of your question, yes you can get pregnant. You can do a pregnancy test to find out if you are pregnant and if you have access to a doctor go and see him/her and get some contraceptives such as the pill.

You need to do another pregnancy test in about a week and go and see a doctor. The withdrawal method is not a form of contraception that works, so if by chance you aren't pregnant this time, make sure you protect yourself properly in the future. The ipill has to be taken within 72 hours and if the fertilized egg has already implanted it is not effective at all (so if you fell pregnant on the 1st, 4th or 13th it will not make any difference at all). I'm young (barely legal) and already I've had a miscarriage. I didn't even know I was pregnant until I went to see a doctor! We'd used multiple forms of protection including the pill (used as directed) and condoms. It's true, we're young and reckless, but it's good to know what will help and what wont.
Now days I've come to the point of feeling scared when something's not right. Unfortunatly I suffer from PMDD and sometimes symptoms can match up. I start stressing out and that stress causes me to miss occationaly and scares me even more.

Condoms are very reliable as long as it didn't don't tear or split and as long as he didn't put it in before you used the condom? The only thing you can do right now is see if your period arrives. If it doesn't you can do a pregnancy test. If it's negative and your period still doesn't come then go and see your doctor. Best wishes

I would like to ask if there is any possibility that my gf will get pregnant if we made our last contact on January 8, 2011 but I withdrawn long before I come, and her last period was December 1, 2010. Knowing she has an irregular cycle, and up to this date January 20, 2011 she doesn't have her period yet.

I found this article very interesting. Its impressive how well youve answered all these questions over the past years. I have researched the morning after pill previously and there is no evidence that it causes any damage to the embryo at all. Nope you can't get pregnant again if you are already pregnant. If she is pregnant then it would have had to be either the first man or the second - she wouldn't know unless a DNA test was done after the birth.

How can we tell anyone not to have sex when we are doing it ourselves? It is such a natural part of life. Please do not wish marriage on anyone. It is not for everyone. Hi i just wanted to comment to all the people who think they maybe pregnant, if you are there is no chance of dealing with the pregnancy other than abortion. Plan B only works after first 72 hours. So if your pregnant you have to deal with it. If not an abortion, give the child up for adoption. My question is when you are on birth control does it damage the baby if you get pregnant? we were going to use condoms but it was excruciatingly painful so we didn't use them. Thanks.

Hi i have read studys on pre cum it has stated that it does not contain sperm , if was any small amount its dead. Read the only way pre cum will contain sperm is if after ejaculation you havent gone for a pee . 2 different glands sperm one and cowpers glad seperate from that said pre cum is just a lubricant from seperate glad . Wats your thoughts on these studys? It was all about withdrawl method saying aslong as guy goes for a pee wash area after ejaculating then no spearm shall b in pre cum.
The only thing I do not get is the ovulation thing. My mum always told me while I was visiting her in Liverpool was to make sure I wasn't ovulating if I was to have sex. I just don't get how you can tell... Some say to watch for a change in cervical fluid (or something similar to that!) But honestly, I have no change. It seems I have discharge from the end of my period all the way until my next period, so I'm scared to have sex again. Megs, I hadn't heard about the research so did some of my own. It seems the earlier study on the pre-ejaculate of HIV + men showed either none or low levels of sperm. But they said themselves that further study was needed as it was as small sample and I would imagine that there could well be effects on sperm production due to the range of medications that HIV + people take.

Sabella, if you use contraception there's no need to be scared. There are various ways of tracking ovulation but it's not a form of contraception I would recommend - the chance of falling pregnant with these methods is huge (up to 25%). i took the pill but stopped mid cycle,(i was a first time user but only took it for 10 days) thought ovulation wouldhnt happen for a couple of weeks, but for the last three week now i have been having pregnancy symptoms but getting negative pregnancy results. Wonder, the ovum lives for around 24 hours after ovulation. It's released from the ovary and travels down the fallopian tube where hopefully sperm are waiting to meet it. If there are none there to fertilise the ovum it is reabsorbed into the body as it disintegrates.

So the story is - I was on the pill (Loestren 20) and had the seven day break, my period arrived on 30th August. I was suppose to start a new pack on 4th September but didn’t. Me and my partner had sex on that night (4th Sept) and then on 9th, 10th,11th 14th and 17th September. He is aware I stopped taking the pill (wasn’t agreeing with me) and he has been withdrawing, but ejaculated on 4th – I know this is not a safe method but we have been together for a couple of years and are happy in our relationship – a child would be welcomed and loved.

I gave birth in my 20s to my ONLY biological (i also have one adopted). For years my husband and I weren't able to get pregnant again(doctors couldn't explain why we couldn't because everything was "normal").
Then in early 30s i got pregnant again but had a miscarriage 12 weeks later. That came with a D&C and the pronouncement that the likelyhood of my getting pregnant again would be significantly lower.
My marriage ended.
Thankfully, I had my two children(one bio + one adopted) so i was perfectly happy and didn't want any more.
I inquired about birth control after my divorce at age of 41 but doctors mentioned that given my history of NOT getting pregnant successfully and my advanced age, the likelyhood of my getting preggo was less than 1%.
12 years (after my miscarriage) surprise surprise i became pregnant at the age of 47!
For years i didn't use protection and then when i entered my mid 40s i knew the "likelyhood" of my getting pregnant even in the best of circumstances was slim-due to my age and history.
The only thing that i could think of that i did differently that i had not done in the past with my ex-husband or my fiancee was to go on a fruit smoothie and veggie juicing diet, add flaxseed and omega oils to my diet, cut out alcohol, junk food and especially caffeine drinks completely, added exercise and lost 15lbs.
When i began changing my diet and adding more healthy habits i had alot more energy, my libido was heightened (though i didn't necessarily have intercourse more often)my cholesterol lowered, blood pressure improved and i was healthier. Unfortunately,I think this change toward healthy lifestyle contributed to my ability to get pregnant again despite my age.
My Fiancee (also in his 40s with grown kids) and i were shocked to say the least and not prepared to have another child.
7 weeks later i miscarried.
For us no more listening to docs. It's birth control pills for me from now on.
Oh and by the way, when i went to the OB there was a lady there who was 60 and 8 weeks pregnant. Which she (and doc)thought was an impossibility since she was in poor health and had already gone through menopause!

I heard sperm only lasts three days at best and my doctor told me the pull out method is 88.5 percent effective. I have been using the pull out method for 7 years and it has been 100 percent effective for me. To me that means the pre sperm are not stronger and the guy just has to be good about getting out in time.

I definitely don't want to get pregnant as I have just had a baby (now 5 months and planned!). But I should know by now (at 34 years) what you have to do to avoid getting pregnant! Although accidents still do happen to many people. I like the point about avoiding alcohol as drunken nights and mistakes can get you into a lot of trouble.

Just don't do it! All the rest falls short of it :) But some methods are better then others. :)
