Another List of Psychological Movies to Enjoy

I've already shared with you the best psychological movies of all time but if you're hungry for more, here are another 25 great psychological movies that fall into that category that are all worthy of a place in your collection.

Again, we are not limited to the suspenseful psychological thriller here (although of course there are some movies that will fall into that genre) - additionally there are freaky love stories, ghostly flicks, psycho madmen, mind boggling action and sci-fi lunacy plus a whole heap more to enjoy.

So enjoy and freak yourself out as much as you like!

A Clockwork Orange

A Clockwork Orange is the classically weird movie from the master of intensity, Stanley Kubrick. Twisted, psychedelic, disturbing and violent - watch at your own risk!

Particularly good on Blu Ray, it's a must have for your psychological movie collection.

_________________________________________________________________

Cape Fear

This 1991 remake of Cape Fear by Martin Scorsese is a triumph of suspense and is a frightening thrill ride. Robert De Niro plays the role of the psychotic and vengeful Max Cady to perfection. Many movie lovers prefer this remake to the original and there is certainly a great deal that's plenty good about it. Enjoy!

________________________________________________________________

12 Monkeys

12 Monkeys is a post apocolyptic futuristic sci-fi that has been brilliantly directed (by Terry Gilliam) with characters perfectly acted by Brad Pitt, Bruce Willis and the rest of the cast. This psychological movie explores the line between sanity and insanity in a fascintating way and both actors already mentioned have their finest hours.

_________________________________________________________________

The Ring

There aren't that many scary movies that actually scare me, but this one did (and not because it's full of gore or violence - it's not). There's something about The Ring that hooks into your psychology and gets your heart racing with fear in much the same way as The Shining does. This psychological horror is a good example of movie making that manages to produce a feeling of constant dread. Great!

________________________________________________________________

The Matrix

No list of psychological movies could be without The Matrix collection. Yes, they are essentially a set of futuristic action movies, but they get into your head, especially when you take the story in all 3 movies as a whole. With plenty of philospohical elements to get you thinking this collection is a must have. If you don't have the set on blu ray then you are missing a trick - fabulously enjoyable!

_________________________________________________________________

What Lies Beneath

What Lies Beneath is a supernatural thriller with some great twists and extremely good acting from Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Certainly Hitchcockesque, it delivers the same quality of creating a great deal of suspense and there are some good "jump out of your seat" moments.

________________________________________________________________

Silent Hill

This one was a surprise to me - I'd enjoyed the game on Playstation and found it very creepy to play, but I really didn't expect much from the movie. I was wrong! The movie Silent Hill captures the same atmosphere of dread and suspense that the game does and has pretty much the same story line - that of a weird and strange abandoned town and an ordinary family's experiences there.

_________________________________________________________________

The Sixth Sense

The Sixth Sense has become a classic supernatural movie and it definitely has some interesting twists. In my opinion this is M. Night Shyamalan's best psychological movie and the casting of Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment in the lead roles was a brilliant move. The relationship between them really makes this movie memorable. A spooky movie, with plenty of thrills!

________________________________________________________________

The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal & Red Dragon

These three movies really need to be purchased as a set as each tells different element of the Hannibal Lecter story. The Silence of the Lambs is without doubt the most suspenseful of the three and both Jodi Foster and Anthony Hopkins give their best ever preformances. A must have classic!

_________________________________________________________________

The Omen Trilogy

For those that enjoy the horror/supernatural genre, The Omen is definitely one to keep in your collection. Chillingly spooky, these movies freaked the hell out of me in my younger years and I still enjoy watching them - and being scared by them. Damien is a very scary character, brilliantly portrayed and the accompanying musical score is incredible (in fact the most frighteneing aspect of the movie in my opinion.) Great performances from Gregory Peck and Lee Remick.

________________________________________________________________

Dead Again

"An overlooked jewel of a movie", Dead Again, which stars and is directed by Kenneth Brannagh is an innovative, dark thriller with an intriguing story line. A young Emma Thompson plays her role excellently and without giving too much away, the chemistry between her and Brannagh is palpable. Loads of suspense, this is a movie not to be missed!

________________________________________________________________

Planet of the Apes

Planet of the Apes is a must have movie for all collectors of sci-fi, weird or psychological movies. The story line is totally unique and has a momentous twist at the end. Whether you go for the original or the remake (personally I enjoyed the remake more, which some may say makes me a heathen - but what the heck!) this is a movie with much to say about the human condition and society in general. A definite keeper!

________________________________________________________________

Phone Booth

At the time of release Phone Booth received mixed reviews, but personally I really enjoyed it. The suspense continues throughout the film and reaches a satisfying climax. This is a psychological thriller that creates tension and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Additionally Colin Farrell, Keifer Sutherland and Forest Whitaker are all believeable in their roles. A unique story line!

_________________________________________________________________

The Time Traveller's Wife

The Time Traveller's Wife is without question one of the best novels I've ever read and while reading I did wonder to myself, "How are they ever going to make this into a movie?" The story is so complex, I didn't think they'd ever be able to pull it off well, but somehow the makers did achieve a very good psychological movie that is beautifully done. Totally gripping with an unforgettable story line, The Time Traveller's Wife is a love story with a difference.

________________________________________________________________

The Green Mile

The Green Mile, (another adpatation of a Stephen King book) does not fit into any kind of stereotype - it's a completely unique movie that does not sit neatly within any genre. For me it's a psychological movie because it gets into your head and also produces so many intense emotional responses from the viewer. Definitely one to buy and watch over and over again.

_________________________________________________________________

Deja Vu

Deja Vu is a cleverly woven story within the action genre, but it doesn't stop there! There are also heavy elements of sci-fi in the form of our time travelling hero (Denzel Washington). To really enjoy this film you need to watch closely and pick up all the details. Defnitely one that can be enjoyed over and over!

________________________________________________________________

The Truman Show

This is a psychological movie that is both heartwarming and 100% unique. The Truman Show featuring Jim Carrey, takes you on an unexpected emotional journey and leaves you asking so many questions. For many, this is the best performance from Jim Carrey as he takes a massive step away from his normal "stupid guy" roles. If you haven't watched this movie, then don't read the reviews - it's best to watch it fresh without being aware of the story line.

_________________________________________________________________

The Others

The Others is a classic supernatural thriller and personally the only Nicole Kidman movie I like. She does a wonderful job in this atmospheric, intense and spooky ghost story, as does the rest of the cast. There are few ghost stories that create the tension that this one manages. A "fascinating existential puzzle" with a unique and intelligent story line.

________________________________________________________________

One Hour Photo

In One Hour Photo, Robin Williams creates an intriguing multifaceted character that is a welcome departure from his other more comedic roles. This is a beautiful psychological thriller with some very dark elements that anyone who enjoys this genre will love. Mesmerizing and inventive this is psychological movie making at its best.

_________________________________________________________________

Minority Report

Minority Report is a Steven Spielberg masterpiece in the sci-fi, thriller genre that any serious collector of psychological movies should have on their shelf. This is a movie that makes you think on many levels, from the moral issues surrounding scientific advancement to the philosophical implications of governmental control. Tom Cruise's performance is excellent and the story line complex - a must have!

________________________________________________________________

The Prestige

The Prestige is another Christopher Nolan classic of the psychological movie genre which is what he does so well (Memento, Inception). This movie has drama, tension, obsession and mystery by the bucket load and with enough complexity to keep you wondering and thinking, it's one to watch over and over.

________________________________________________________________

Shutter Island

The theme of insanity so often plays out in psychological movies and Shutter Island, from Martin Scorsese, does it pretty well. Leonardo DiCaprio is good in the main character role and becomes increasingly interesting as the movie progresses. Personally I didn't like the end so much (having enjoyed it thoroughly up until that point), but maybe I need to watch it again and see if I missed something. ;)

________________________________________________________________

Freddy Got Fingered

I wasn't totally sure I should include this film in my list of psychological movies. It's not a thriller, it's not suspenseful, but it will absolutely do your head in and probably not in a good way! Freddy Got Fingered is sick and twisted and also extremely funny (if you've got that kind of sense of humor). Tom Green shows us what a complete nutjob he is in this movie. One for the broadminded among you, who don't mind being shocked.

_________________________________________________________________

Secret Window

Secret Window is a psychological thriller that is an adaptation of a short story by Stephen King about a writer (Johnny Depp) and a psycho stalker (John Turturro). There's more to the movie than this but without giving away the ending, all I'll say is that there are some twists and turns you might not expect. A good performance from Depp really makes this film worth watching.

Interesting list Susana, I can't take much gore and slashing, but do enjoy a good pyschological thriller. I haven't seen some of these movies, so will have to look them up

Thanks Pam :)

Hi Katie - You're welcome! So what's your favorite psychological movie of all time? Enjoy your movie night :)

I'm with you on that CMHypno. I don't like gore either (unless it's absolutely essential to the story line e.g. Fight Club). If I'm going for horror I prefer something that's scary but in a chilling eerie way. Enjoy!

You have created another superior list of psych films, Susana. I missed seeing only one - Freddy Got Fingered. Only because the leading actor annoys me with his goofy posturing.

Wow, Susana - a great list. You picked out some classic films. If the networks showed all these on TV this week, I'd take a sickie and watch most of them. Heh! Great hub! Cheers!

Hey Cheeky - now there's an idea! If only the TV networks would put some decent films on.....

Check out Primal Fear with Ed Norton and Richard Gear. Ed Norton played the hell out of his character who brutally murdered a homosexual porno loving priest, but blames it on his "other personality". You gotta see this movie. The ending will make you think twice about everybody you know (or "think" you know).

Cheers for that one mxj - I will definitely be checking out Primal Fear!

Check out Memento. Guy Pearce rocks! And the story is so twisted you'll want to watch it over and over again.

Hi Autumn - Yep I love Memento too. I'm pretty sure I put it on the other list of psychological movies. It's definitely Guy Pearce's best movie by far.

Susana S a great list. Cape Fear was OK. The Sixth Sense had me 'going' right up to the end.

Like 'mxj' I thought Primal Fear was a great movie with a great twist at the end. Rated up and Twittered out:-)

Any list like this that misses "Don't Look Now" is incomplete, though it's a nice effort.

Funny. This is the first time I have ever met -if met is the right word over the internet-anyone who prefers theremake of Cape Fear over the original.

I hated the ending to The Prestige because I bonded with Hugh Jackman's charactor. It was an interesting story.

Red Dragon was first made into a movie titled Manhunter, starring Tom Noonan in an awesome roll as the killer. It was much better than the remake. Brain Cox played Hannibel Lector, did a fantastic job and william Peterson of CSI fame playes the trouble profiler that caught dr Lector and was almost killed by him, now searching for Noonan's Madman. I highly recommend it.

The Others is the only movie I can watch again and again without getting bored. Not only is the plot great but I love the gothic mansion. This is another great list and I agree with your picks. Rated up & awesome!
