Web Content and What Topics to Write About to Make Money
81What Topics to Write About When Writing for the Web
Before there is any possiblity of earning from web content either on an article revenue sharing site, a blog or website, you need to write something! So in this section of my "How to make Money on Online" series, we're going to look at:
-
What Topics to Write About
-
How Much to Write
-
Quality of Writing
-
Other Considerations
So what topics can you write about to make money through web content? There's no easy answer to this question because almost any topic can be monetized - that is you can earn money from it. My suggestion is to keep an ongoing list of topics that you could write about, as new ideas will frequently come to mind as you go along.
Write What You Know
When people start thinking about writing as a career whether it's online or offline, the advice they receive from more exxperienced writers is, "write what you know" and it's very good advice. There's not a lot of point writing on subjects that you know little about, have little interest in and could take many hours to research. You may decide to do this later on, but to start with write what you know.
You may be thinking but I don't know much! Well, I will challenge that strongly - you know more than you think you know! If I can jot down 100 writing topics in half an hour so can you.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Topics to Write About Could Include:
- Skills you've learnt in your day job and jobs you've held in the past.
- Special interests you have and hobbies.
- Topics you've researched previously for other reasons.
- Places you've lived in or holidayed in.
- Health problems you or someone you know has had.
- Problems or issues that you have overcome.
- Products you use and could write a useful review on.
Let's break these suggestions down some more and to help you, I'll use myself as an example. I'll show you the hundreds of things I could choose from to write about and illustrate how we all have tonnes of knowledge and skills to share.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Write About Skills You've Developed in the Day Jobs You've Had
Think about the jobs you've had, paid and voluntary, and what those jobs required you to do or to know about.
The main jobs I've had and in no particular order are: working in a restaurant - Nursery School Assistant - Youth Worker - Writing and Delivering Training in a variety of topics - Community project manager - Community development worker - Family support worker - Youth offending worker - Chairperson for a local charity - Counsellor - Advocay work - Mentor - Co-operative business advisor - Freelance writer.
When I break these down even further to look at what skills I have and what topics I know about, I can come up with a huge list and so will you once you do it for yourself!
(I'm sorry this next section is a bit listy, but there was just no other way to do it! Just make sure you use the headings to write your own lists as you go through - this will give you plenty of writing ideas for months, if not years, to come.)
Break Down the Subjects Even Further
All of these topic areas can be broken down even further, so for instance where one of my personal interests is reading, I could decide to review the latest books I've read, or write about my top 10 science fiction books, the worst books or the most inspiring books I've ever read.
I could write many articles about one of the places I've lived in and write about the Pretty Villages of Essex, Best Pubs in Essex, What to See in Essex, The New Towns of Essex, and Essex Girls.
The list of what topics to write about is almost endless when I start to think about all the possible aspects and viewpoints in the various categories and subjects, but how to choose what to write on from the miriad topics and subtopics available?
Choosing What Topics to Write About
To start with I'd say choose what most interests and excites you! Learn your craft and develop your voice through these first few articles. Then once you've learnt all about keyword research, look back over your list of ideas and find out which subjects and subtopics have the most value and the least competition or in other words - find your niche or niches. There's no need to stick to one topic unless you really want to. In fact, I'd suggest trying out quite a few topics - you may be surprised at what earns and what doesn't.
How Much to Write and Writing a Quality Article or HubPage
When I first came to HubPages I was really interested in writing articles for the Flagship Hub Program (which sadly is not currently operating) and it was the format required for these flagship hubs, that helped me start writing top quality hubs. The instructions to get approval for the program were to:
- Create the World's Best Web Page on the Topic
- Write a minimum of 1500 words
- Add at least 3 Videos
- Add at least 5 Images
- Add at least 10 highly relevant links with descriptions
- Add a news or RSS capsule
- Excellent Page Structure
This is what I began with and it's what I have, in the most part, attempted to stick with. The areas on this list of requisites that I have stuck with are to: try and write the definitive guide on the particular area I am writing on. I always add at least 5 highly relevant links, a news or RSS feed and I make sure that my page structure is pleasing to the eye and easily readable.
Areas I have not kept to 100% of the time include, word count - while most of my hubs are over 1500 words some are shorter. I make sure I write a very minimum of 800 words. This gives search engines enough content to crawl through and enough for readers to feel you are not just bumming them off with some tat.
Images
Depending on what I'm writing on I may use just one image. If it's a sales page I don't want to detract too much from the reader buying. I do like to include a good amount of images in my travel hubs. My travel hubs can use many more images.
Videos
I sometimes use YouTube videos in my hubs, sometimes I don't. For me it depends whether I believe that a visual representation of information will enhance my article or not. For instance if I wrote a hub on "How to Tie Knots" then videos would help a lot. For an article like this one, I don't think a video would help the reader in any way.
Crap Writing = More Clicks?
I wanted to include my two cents on this issue. Some people say that if your writing is poor quality you will get more clicks, because the reader will click on an ad to get to the information they want. This may or may not be true, but I can't see how it would work really. If your content is crap, then unless you have done tonnes of work getting backlinks (which would actually take more time than writing a good article in the first place), you aren't going to get good search potitions - so a lot less visitors. Less visitors = less clicks.
Anyway writing crap would bore me to death as well as go against my principles, so I won't be doing this.
Other Considerations When Writing Web Content
There are many other things to consider when you are writing for the internet, such as:
- Spelling and Grammar - I will only say it once - your spelling and grammar need to be impeccable!
- What tenses to use
- Active vs Passive Words
- Emotional and Psychological Marketing Techniques
-
Use of Pronouns (you, you're)
Write for Your Reader
But I think more important than any of these things above (except for spelling and grammar), is to put yourself in the place of your reader and ask yourself - what will my reader want to know? How would my reader like to be spoken to? As well as writing to be found by search engines, we are also writing to share information. The reader should never be lost in the midst of our need to get good search results positions and get clicks and sales.
Proofread, proofread and proofread some more
There's nothing worse or more off putting than trying to read online content with numerous spelling and grammatical errors. Make sure your spelling is perfect by proofreading your work a few times and using spellcheck.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And finally....
I hope this article, (which is number 2 in the series on how to make money on online), has given you ideas on what topics to write about and how to write quality web content for the internet.
Agree with all of that except the grammar as I deliberately use bad grammar ya know. I do however try to leave my hub short of full info so they click out to find out more.
Btw will be posting that hub you requested on Friday, yer wish is moi command ; )
Fabulous hub! I was fascinated by the concept of 'crap writing' for clicks. That's base. I can't imagine an honest writer doing this for cash, seems somehow whorish.
I don't know if I can update my previous comment, but I want to tell you what a beautiful job you did on this topic, rather than focusing on the negative!
Thank you so much for a very inspiring hub on how to make money on hubpages. Thank you for sharing. Godspeed. crteativeone59
well.. nice tutorial for the newbies who joined here in Hubpages..
Great, great, great. Definitely a must read for newbies. I haven't yet understood how to use rss feeds but I'm working on that, and the policy about links: one, more than one, to fellow hubbers, outside links and so on. And I agree with you on your position on real books, books lovers will never leave paper for something else, and paper tires much less our eyes. As regards crap hubs you are definitely right, even if I see a lot of them with an high hubscore, which is somewhat strange.
Forgive me if I jump a little over your spelling and grammar recommendation. :)
Wonderful hub.
Thanks for the excellent information. Especially liked your suggestion about news feeds and will definitely be trying to "up" the word count on more of my future hubs as up till now aside from two they've been primarily photo archives. Never to old to learn though - right?
No real difference as I do my intro then ending, bang in about 9 photos in which I write at least 4 lines each including a funny pun.
I do however miss my humor hubs so am thinking of returning with that and making a tattoo website, the niche is poorly paid but the traffic is high.
As for the bad grammar I have a few hubs high up in google and my funny videos clips website is on the front page. I will have that hub posted for ya tomorrow night, laters !
Thanks Susana, you are really helping me to become a better hubber.
Yer daughters hub is written !
A lot of good suggestions, thanks!
Well, I must say you have really done another great Hub, especially for a newbie,as Nypnodude said in his comments, in reguards to your Hub. After I finsh my lessons on your other hub on how to Get more Traffic and Structure my Hub to return alittle reward. Thanks again. Ed
I truly enjoy your hubs and have also found very useful links here as well. Thank you again. Peace
it is very useful to me
intresting hub with good advice.
best regards,nadia
Outstanding hub! I very much enjoyed this one. Thanks for the great advice.
Really found it full of information & helpful but just getting started myself. I still have problems deciding on what to write about. Also exactly how to put down on page.
Since now I know how to do it I stumbled this hub. :)
My pleasure. :)
Hello! Your advice is practical and caused me to think about new subjects I've overlooked. Thank you.
I'd agree with your assessment, and lorlie6 that crap writing won't really generate much of anything. I think, to some extent, that even thinking of writing in terms of money first could be a bit more work. I say, focus on writing as well as you can, and be creative about how you might try to monetize what you've created after the fact.
That's something I'm still working out since most of what I write is opinion-based, and therefore harder to monetize. I do try to incorporate a little word play in my Amazon choices, though. For example, in my latest hub about president Obama berrating the republicans I used words like "garbage," and "crap" to find products or book titles for the hub. :)
Great information, I am reading around your articles and finding lots that are interesting.
really great info
What a very interesting and informative read. It is no wonder your scores are so high. Your writings are so captivating I can not stop until I finish your articles. Thanks for the info.
What a find! It's something I've been looking for years, and finally found.
While all of us are obviously 'experts' at so many things, it is just so difficult to break it down into something 'do-able' and 'write-able'. Your hub breaks it down so beautifully, I feel like crying why I didn't see it earlier.
Well, better late than never, and I'm going to get going on that writing part. My head is bursting with ideas now.
Thank you so much, from the heart!
This is a very good hub. I have wrote a hub on the same topic, but I must say you have done a much better job than I did. Well done. Thumbs up and stumbled.
Very helpful. Thank you.
I love your listy bits in here. Very helpful. I haven't joined hubpages YET - but I am learning so much from your hubs. My goal is to inform myself on how to make a great hub and start out with a bang. Your info is spot on in this regard. Cheers!
It's really a good tutorial to begin with!
Hi Susana S, Your article is very informataive. You sound to me like a genuine "wana help person"
Thanks for the info it was very helpful.
Thank you so much for this information, its given me a lot to think about
A very good hub to begin with. I really like it ^_
Hi, i've read two of your hubs from "How to make Money on Online" series...very good ones and informative...I see you have about 115 Hubs...can you tell me or us how much money you made out of all your hubs? Thanks! Keep up the good work!
My New Years Resolution is to optimize my hubpage...thanks so much for helping! Voted Up, Voted Useful :)
Hi Susana, this is a very informative hub on how to write quality hubs (articles). To add on what you have said, it pays to do some keyword research to determine how a keyword is performing in the SE's (Search Engines) and focus on topics that bring traffic.
Keyword research can also give you an idea of how advertisers are paying per click. Writing on these topics will attract high paying adsense ads. Your earning of $1000 from hubpages is very encouraging, I believe that is a decent income for you considering it is also passive.
Thanks Susana, good information for us new hubbers. I like when hubbers write about there hobbies, it's interesting. I will be reading more of your articles.(vote up and useful)
I'm another Hubber who has found your writing skill's
to be not just good, but Very Good look forward to reading more of Articles Soon
Thank you Susana for sharing this Hub. It is very useful to me as I am new here in HP. Voted up!
well written and useful as ever
Susana, I appreciate your sharing with us what to write here in hubpages. I'm glad that I came across with this hub of yours. I should have read it months ago. Anyway, not everything is too late.
Wow, you just got my mind rolling on things to write about. Thanks, excellent advice!
Very useful guidance.
I just bought the book you recommended in this article (Web Copy That Sells). I hope I'll learn something new and useful by reading it :)
Excellent hub and very informative. I started out with writing on health and wellness issues because I have a passion about it, so your advice about writing about what you know or what excites you, is spot on.
Voted up and bookmarked.
Even though I write on a variety of subjects, I'm always on the lookout for new ideas. You really put a lot of useful information into this. And I already got some ideas that I can use from your list. Thank you so much Susana. This is extremely useful for any writer; Those who are just starting out as well as those who have been writing a long time already.
