Best Websites to Get Freelance Writing Jobs UK, US & Worldwide
821000's of Freelance Writing Jobs at the Best Freelance Writing Websites
Whether you're based in the UK, the US or somewhere else in the world, there are plenty of jobs for freelance writers available on the net if you know where to look. Anyone can use these freelance websites to get work - experienced journalists with solid writing backgrounds, writers of web content or simply those who would like to get into the business of writing for money. Of course, the more proficient your writing skills are, the higher the prices you can command for your work.
The Best Freelance Writing Websites
Whatever your background, you'll find plenty of job opportunities at the best freelance writing websites below. Some of the websites like freelancer.co.uk and PeoplePerHour, are primarily for those writers based in the UK, but to be honest where you live doesn't really matter. Regardless of the country you live in you can join any of the following freelance websites and start working.
How Freelance Writing Websites Work
Most of the freelance job sites work in the same ways. Firstly, you'll find two main areas of the site - one for providers (that's you as a writer) and one for hirers (the people who are going to pay you for your work). In the provider section you'll be able to see the jobs currently open in various categories such as writing, design, programming etc; the hirers budget for the particular job; how many people have already placed a proposal and how much time is left before bidding ends.
Once you've signed up for one or more of the freelance writing websites below and before you start bidding on copywriting work, you'll need to complete your profile; add your CV and provide links to, or write summaries of, your writing portfolio. You'll also need to choose how you would like to be paid. Most freelance writer sites pay via Escrow or PayPal. If the site offers online tests of your skills, it's definitely worth taking a few so that you can show potential clients your level of writing ability especially if you haven't got much of a portfolio.
Freelancer Websites
Freelancer has 3 websites covering the US, Europe and the UK. It doesn't matter where you live, you can sign up for one or more of these websites, though freelancer.com does have the most writing work opportunities. Each website offers many freelance work opportunities for writers, copy editors and proofreaders, as well as freelance jobs for web developers, telemarketers, researchers, virtual assistants, data entry, graphic designers, plus a whole lot more. If you're UK based freelancer.co.uk is a good venue to get freelance writing jobs, because the pay tends to be higher and far more in-line with UK hourly rates than some of the other freelance writing sites.
oDesk
oDesk has a reputation among freelance writers for being a poor payer, but this is not necessarily so. You'll see many writing jobs offered with extremely low budgets because many writers on oDesk are non-native English speakers/writers and live in countries where the cost of living is very low. If you are a native English speaker, ensure that you let customers know this when you bid on work and capitalize on this advantage. You can get well paid writing work on oDesk, it just means looking a bit harder through the writing job postings and building up your reputation.
Constant Content
Constant Content works in a completely different way to the other freelance writing sites I've mentioned. At Constant Content you can either write articles you want to write and post a set price for your work or take writing jobs from clients who will pay you a fixed fee. The fees are pretty good $20-$100 per article, but to be accepted here your grammar, spelling, sentence structure and use of English must be impeccable. Many writers are turned away, but if you can make it past the editor's standards, who reviews all submitted articles manually, then it's a great place to get writer freelance jobs that pay well.
Elance
Elance is one of the most well known places on the net to find writer freelance jobs and a multitude of other types of freelance work as well. As with oDesk, you'll need to start with bidding for quite low paid writing work and increase your rates as you build up your reputation (unless you already have a good portfolio which showcases your writing ability.) Always go for jobs that are offering payment through Escrow as this protects both yourself and the client.
People Per Hour
People Per Hour is an international freelance site based in the UK (so you'll see jobs priced in £ rather than $). It works in the same way as oDesk and Elance in that you'll write your profile, take skills tests, bid on projects you like the look of and build a reputation. PeoplePerHour also uses the Escrow system for payments.
Membership and Fee Options
At this point you can also make a decision about which membership option you want to go for. Most freelance job sites offer various levels of membership - some free and some paid. To start with I'd recommend going for the free options, so that you can get a feel for the site before spending out any money. Whichever membership option you go for, be aware that the way these freelance sites make money themselves is by taking either a fixed commission for each job you complete or a fixed percentage based on the job value.
Bidding on Freelance Writing Jobs
With the above elements in place it's time to begin bidding on work. Be specific in your bid about why you would be the best person for the job and don't make the mistake of doing a cut and paste job when writing your bids - hirers really don't like this and it will be a waste of your time. In the early days you will more than likely need to bid low ($1-2 per 100 words) in order to get a few jobs. Once you have a few writing jobs under your belt and you've received positive feedback (most of the writing sites have this feature kind of like Ebay) you can start to increase your prices.
What Makes a Good Freelance Writer?
The best earners on freelance sites are 100% reliable, deliver their work on time and to customer specifications, communicate frequently with the client and can write fluently on a variety of topics. Your spelling, grammar and sentence structure need to be good as well, because the customer will not want to have to spend time editing your work. Your writing will need to be fluent, but fortunately you don't need to be a literary genius to get good writer freelance jobs.
Freelance Writing - A Great Way to Make a Living
Making a good living as a freelance writer is highly achievable and makes a wonderful compliment to writing on article sites (such as this one - HubPages) or your own blogs and websites, especially if you're not having a good month revenue wise! You can boost your monthly earnings at any time by taking writer freelance jobs at any of the freelance writer sites mentioned here. Working as a writer from home can be extremely satisfying if you're a lover of words and it's a fantastic way to get a good work/life balance.

Your hub offers some really good information. Well written with useful links.
This is another great hub, your so amazing at pulling all the need to know details together in a brillant format that is easy to read and grasp. No one else needs to write on this topic... Well DONE! Thanks and Peace :)
P.S. Congrats on being here a year! Looks like you and I may have joined at the same time, do forgive me however I just recently (three months) started working here, I slacked for the first nine months. :)
Great Susana and one of my great 60dc is showing her feisty and fiery form again... Rated this up and Bookmarked it! Thanks a lot!
Thanks Susan, you brought happiness to everyone by sharing this information. I think this is very useful for us. I'll bookmark this one. Please allow me to rate this Up. thank you very much. Good work, Susana!
Great information on freelance writing sites Susana, especially as you included some info on UK sites.
good info
Thank you so much for sich great help and information.
Excellent quality Hub with useful information for freelance writers. I am a member of Odesk and Elance myself, so I appreciate your quick and easy links to their site within your Hub. Your explanations and links will help other freelancers get connected with these sites as well. Keep up the great Hubs!
Susana, Thank you for sharing all of these sites.I have been signed up with Elance. The other sites sound great also. Your articles is great.
Very useful information, thank you.
Hi Susana! I'm stuck building my profile on oDesk but when I see how low they pay for a lot of work, no wonder I have no motivation to start bidding. Research is always the harder part of writing as it takes a lot of time. I must add, I've seen many non-native English speakers who express themselves much better than natives (if they studied the language and literature, of course). And as for the grammar, when I do the proofreading or editing in my mother tongue, I still need books covering grammar and writing just like a farmer needs a hoe and a shovel to work in his field.
Great information here thanks, I will be bookmarking it to digest fully in the future. You've done all the research and given us the benifit, so much appreciated, thanks
My favorites are probably elance and odesk! I'll have to check out a few of those other ones.
Constant Content offers writers just that little extra bit of freedom, which I which I think makes it a good one for any writers to add to his list of sites.
From all these sites I have been actively using odesk and constantcontent in the past few years. As a buyer/customer not provider/author. And I could say that oDesk ROCKS from buyers perspective. I guess providers (writers) could also agree because I noticed a lot of them earn for living by writing through oDesk. Not only people from third world, but from US. There are lot of buyers who order articles only from native English speakers and pay 20$ and more for article. If you are writer you just have to find good opportunities in all that noise.
thanks for the tips susana
Good tips and ideas. I will be looking over those sites tonight!!
super!! I will try one of your suggestions and see how it pans out ty for sharing this valuable info ~Hugs~
Great article here. I've been rejected twice by Constant Content, but won't give up. At least they pay enough to live on. Will never understand why anyone will accept the subhuman pay offered at some writing sites. It takes time to do research before and editing after writing.
Thank you for this very useful article. I will probably check out a few of the sites you mention. I'm a refugee from university presses whose budgets have become tighter than bark on a hickory tree.
wow great information thanks for sharing this.
You have provided a lot of great information for both those just starting out and those looking for new ways to make more money.
I'm learning alot, thanks again.
Well written.
This was a really informative hub! I myself haven't tried any of these sites and am new to freelancing, and I am looking forward to checking these sites out, thank you.
Susana-- this is great just exactly what I was looking for, keep up the great work.
Yep. You rock. Great Hub! I'm in the middle of a mean deadline myself, otherwise I'd bother to tell you that all your Hubs are pretty phenomenal. Like this one.
But.
I don't have time to say all that...
You give some good advice here Susana S. Thank you very much!
Very useful hub and well written. Thanks. Wish I had the energy to follow up on some of this, but I'm sure some folks here can and do, so your effort is of much value.
Interesting information. I used to write for a site that was absorbed by another entity. Was hoping to see them on this list. Aparently not. Oh, well. Good hub.
Just joined hubpages and starting out with this adventure, so great help. Thankyou!
Wow, great information for newbie on Hubpages. Thanks.
Very nice information but I prefer to use Hubpages.com because it is one of the best writing platforms on the internet.
Thank you for the information on finding reputable companies online to make money. I find that when I google knowing who is credible or scam is extremely hard, thanks for the links.
I'm really glad I found this hub; great info and excellent links. I didn't realize there were so many opportunities out there.
Thanks Susana S.
Nice article with some useful tips.
Thanks for a very Informative hub
I wasn't aware of Odesk - thanks!
Nice list. Here's another one: www.ifreelance.com
BEWARE YOUR PRIVACY!
I joined Freelancer.co.uk after reading this hub. Was perfectly happy with it at first, and had interest on the first two bids I placed. All was going well. Until...
I realised that virtually everything I was doing was public! As I'm employed full-time and my employer doesn't much like people doing work on the side, I didn't want my name to be publicly displayed. I didn't realise it would all be public when I joined so had used my real name as my username. I had simply assumed that, like Facebook, you would be able to choose your own privacy settings.
Nope. Not allowed.
"OK", I thought, "I'll just change my username."
Nope. Also not allowed.
Unfortunately, therefore, I've had to ask that they remove me from their site - after investing hours creating a profile, searching projects, contacting project owners, etc, etc.
Extremely disappointed. I really feel that they've not thought through the full implications of their site design for professional writers.
Does anyone know which of these sites protect your privacy better than Freelancer.com?
Thanks Susanna. Just seems a shame to me - I would very much like to be fully transparent with the clients I'm working with, rather than having to not post a photo or my real name. Hardly engenders a spirit of mutual trust...
To add on your list other freelancing sites include guru.com, getafreelancer.com and rentacoder.com
Just want to add an update to this page. Having had my bad experience with freelancer.co.uk, I did my homework into what other options were out there. Ultimately decided on giving oDesk.com a try, and signed up. Very happy to find that you can set your own privacy preferences, and so I went the whole hog and uploaded my portfolio, did the skills test, and started applying for jobs.
Got my first contract this morning, and all's going well. Very pleased so far.
So, yeah, just wanted to share my experience. Hope it helps.
Susan your articles are always informative and well written.
Great Hub Susan, with lots of good information on how to become a Freelance writer. I shall definitely add it to my favorites.
